Fleas and their prevention

We used Advantix for a while. I dont worm at the same time as I know they get ill. I will certainly look at the lower dose so thanks.
A little more investigation and it seems there may be a dog "bug" going round the village as another dog has been ill with D & V
I thought that garlic made animals ill as its part of the onion family and dogs cant have onion?
We do live in the country and the cats would pick fleas up in a heartbeat. It doesnt help that we have a cat who appears to be allergic to spring and is a scratchy lad at the moment with bald patches (he went through this last year)
I much prefer something natural but given the hound picked up fleas when I didnt treat him for 6 weeks I am a bit reluctant to not have a prevention in place.0 -
Mine had diarrhoea yesterday funnily enough. She wasn't poorly - still playing and eating fine so I've just put her on a chicken & rice diet for a few days and given her some pro kolin plus. No idea what caused it.SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65

Small amounts of garlic would seem to be fine. When I make liver cake/ sardine flapjack I put in a couple of cloves of chopped garlic- that's to at least 1lb flour/oats.
You can also get garlic juice to use as a antiseptic from Dorwest. I see they also have garlic tablets for dogs & cats to treat specific conditions.
Different worming preparations seem to affect animals differently. I have always used Drontal / Cestem which are fine for mine but a friend couldn't use those for her dog and used Panacur (granules, I think) instead with no side effects.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Both these were recommended by our Vet years ago, Fleas can't stand Lemon or Garlic also they will never become immune to it.
The way fleas multiply i can not see why anyone would wait until they have fleas before treating an animal because by then you will have thousands in egg or lava form not to mention the horrible little jumping biting terrors.
Or is that just me?
I do neither of these things and m dogs don't get fleas.0 -
I've been using Beaphar spot-on lately but it might be worth taking a look at a flea collar? Something like this might suit well?
I'm sure you probably already do this but are you using room foggers on the rooms that your pets go in and making sure that bedding and cushions are all properly washed and cleaned and carpets well hoovered after each incidence of fleas? The eggs can live for months and keep the cycle re-occuring. Might also be worth giving your dog worming tablets if there's been fleas and it's been a while as there are links between fleas and worms.0
