How to stop animals from defecating in front of my house

Hi,

I added some blue chipping in the front of my house, and it seems that animal(s) are now using the front of my house as litter box? I am not sure if it is foxes, dogs or cats but wondering if there is anything I can put to prevent them from using the area as a litter box?

Not to be crude, but the poos from those 3 animals look (and smell!) completely different. More likely to be cats, but you need to identify what it is as there are different solutions for each.

........if you don't mind making the area around your property smell like a public lavvy from the 1960s, that is!

I would say the first thing is to ID the culprits. We don't know if the area is secure against larger animals that wouldn't climb, like dogs.

However, if it's open to all-comers, then the surface will probably need to change to something less attractive, unless it's dog owners that need educating.

I had a problem with dog faeces on the grass beyond front of my property, which I maintain because the council won't. Getting rid of a fence which gave the dog owners cover was all that was needed. Some people are happy to let their dogs crap anywhere, it seems, provided they think no one can see them.

You could try growing garlic chives (cats don't like the smell) or getting one of those sonar deterrent things.

But agree with the above, worth double checking it si cats and not something else.

    Is it paved/concrete or grass?

I had real trouble with either foxes or cats going to the loo (a lot!) under my car a couple of years ago. I bought some cat repellant spray from Wilko and it stank to high heaven of garlic but did the trick.

However, that might not be useful advice as I think they have stopped doing that particular item (in my local one anyway) so the next time it happened I used bleach and water to scrub/brush the small area that would be under the car.

My thinking is that their noses are far more sensitive than mine so even if some of the residual smell is left then it will be really powerful for them even though the whiff dies down for me.

Each of the above seemed to fix in my particular instance.

    Hope this helps

edit: just seen your note about 'blue chippings' - I suspect a weak solution of bleach/water might deter.
