Dartford tunnel fine misery

We ventured into London this weekend, and our car got clamped, for an unpaid trip across the Dartford tunnel a year ago. I'm pretty sure we paid online for both journeys when we got out the other side. Anyway, we had no idea about this as the Dartford tunnel people sent letters (apparently) to our old address. We moved to Kent about a month before this journey. My husband sent of the car log book for the change of address just after we moved and promptly forgot all about it. On returning home this evening we realised the log book was never returned. So presumably it never reached the dvla. If we get in touch with the dvla about this lost log book and the change of address, do we risk adding a thousand pound fine to the £425 we already shelled out this morning? And do we have any chance of getting a refund of the £425? We really can't afford it, and obviously if we had been aware we owed the money we would have paid it.

There's really no chance of a £1,000 fine. Even if the DVLA prosecuted (which is almost unheard of) the fine would be income-related. In future, note the warning on the V5C and call the DVLA if you don't hear from them with a few weeks.

The bad news is I think you're stuck with the £425 fine.

"Pretty sure we paid" Do you have proof of payment such as a debit card or credit card receipt?
  • Being Mr Neurotic prior to crossing the Dartford crossing earlier this year I pre registered my car and set up an automatic payment. I also checked the payment had been taken.
I know it's too late for you now and I am not preaching but if you research enough it's easy to avoid all Government penalties.
This does not mean that I agree with the way everything is going online these days as not everyone has internet access and certainly the less computer savvy people are the easiest to fall foul of this:mad:

Or just create an account on the official government site, and don't worry about how to pay it again. https://www.gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge

That is, unless they mess up the direct debit and fail to collect the money when your credit gets low.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
