Problem opening pics in W10

After reloading W10 due to it being unable to restore any points I then installed the huge Creative update after being told this would fix it. Now I can't open any picture just by double-clicking on it. I can by opening a photo inside the viewing app program but not by double-clicking. Even after making any app a default it still doesn't open. The app default window springs up like a springer spaniel wagging it's tail with the default app appearing like a neon sign but nothing else happens. I've run the troubleshooter for installed apps and it told me there is a problem. Then it told me 'not fixed'. I ran a sfc but there's nothing wrong. Any ideas?
BTW if support was still going for XP I'd go back to that.
TIA

You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

First thing to check would be to make sure that your folder options is correct. click on the 'start' button and type in "folder options" - select 'file explorer options' from the list. Ensure the 'Double click to open an item (single click to select). is selected.
Next thing is check the default app. Click the start button and type in 'default app settings' and select this from the list. Click on photos and ensure the correct app is selected.IITYYHTBMAD0 -
Suffering windows 10 and although everything is set to open firefox as default a few things still seem to open Edge.
Usual web stuff set to open with firefox so why does a WebGL file which is saved as html open with Edge?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Just checked and Double click to open an item (single click to select). is selected.
Just made Photos (recommended) is default app and ticked always use this app etc. Double clicked on a jpeg and the default window opens and nothing else happens. Ain't the overpaid tech at M$ (kerching) wonderful.
Any other things to try?You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

I tried the hack but the problem remains. All I get when attempting to open a jpeg is the widow asking 'how do you want to open this file' and whatever I do the silly window persists in opening again. You know what uranium is, right?
