Complaining about a tradesman

  • @JEN22. Yes, court is firing neuron's in the back of my mind too. I've come up with a process before I take things to court. So let's see what happens in the next week.

  • While I'm here, what is the legitimacy of this statement below other than what has been mentioned so far:

"against company policy to refund below a certain amount."

I've purposely left out the 'certain amount' for anonymity for the time being. But the 'certain amount' is below what I paid for the job. Conveniently!

You can't just 'come up with a process'.

You have to follow the protocols laid down by the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Do you have any legal cover attached to your home insurance policy? If so, use that to get advice.

If not, then you could ring the national Citizens' Advice Consumer helpline for advice. You must follow the correct process, and they will help you with this.

You will need to explain to them exactly what the problem is.

I'm not clear if you've even made a formal complaint yet by letter (not calls, texts, emails etc) stating your complaint and the redress you require.
That might be the first thing to do before contemplating legal action.
If no satisfactory response then follow it up with an LBA.

  • I've got round to contacting Citizen Advice today, and even though I had an idea of what to do already, it was nice to talk to someone about this and have a case open. By having a case open it has the trader in the sights of Trading Standards.

I've now got a process to follow, and have given the trader a reminder. In the meantime, whilst I suspect the trader will still not respond, I'll be drafting a letter based on the templates available on The Citizen Advice website, ready to send out next week.
