Labor to reduce inheritance tax threshold to just £425,000 while the conservatives are to keep their £1 million threshold.
Apparently the shadow chancellor said to some media folk he may even reduce it to £300,000 and a few years ago they were talking about making it harder to gift capital to avoid IHT (Presumably by increasing the 7 year gifting period to something much longer like 30 years perhaps?)
This should lose the votes of anyone who has a house worth more than £250k0 -
A lot of the actual demand for properties is in Zone 1 and 2 but becuase there are not enough properties in Zone 1 and 2 people are pushed out to zone 3 4 and 5. If there was a lot more housing in zone 1 and 2 then many people in Z3-6 could move to zone 1-2 and free up space in Z3-6 without needing to build much there.
Yet the German total fertility rate is just 1.4 children per women and I suspect like in the UK the figure for the natives is actually lower and the headline figure is boosted by migrants.
More property in zones1 and 2 would help reduce demand further out but not enough in my opinion and the types of property in demand is different.
The German birth rate might well be lower than UK but I'm sure it's not for the reasons you give.0 -

There is a lot of new property being built in zone 1.
But the shiny new ones are not what ordinary people could afford. Generally the new builds are min £400K and that applies in the not-so-nice areas too like Tower Hamlets.
All the building going on in zone 1 is either offices or luxury appointed residences.0 -
my view is there is a link between birth rates and security of shelter.
This of course has led us to the problem of insufficient tax receipts to cover pensions.
There is a reason councils prioritise council housing allocation to parents over childless adults.0 -

I must admit I'm influenced and more educated about the circumstances of my immediate family (like my MIL with dementia) but personally I don't vote with solely my personal circumstances in mind and I don't think everyone else does either. In particular I'd expect most parents and grandparents to consider their children and grandchildren.0 -

No - it's because of contraception and women being educated.

why do germans do this? out of choice not to have a family?
2 reasons; one Germany has a housing surplus and two, the private rental sector is pretty much 100% corporate.

and as a result they have more housing than they need. A lot of it is flats because for some reason that I forget they had to a lot of rebuilding in the 1950s. Oversupply makes it cheap to rent as does the corporate structure of the market. Corporates buy flats, set the interest and the 50-year depreciation against the rent. As a result they have cashflow but pay very little tax. Periodically one corporate will sell another corporate 10,000 depreciated flats which are then refurbished and depreciated all over again. They will never sell them off singly to sitting tenants.
The typical middle class German attends school till 19, university until the age of about 25, then lives in rented flats for 25 years and buys a house only when nearing retirement. They stay in rented flats for so long because they are often let as a shell and the tenant pays to put in the kitchen and bathroom.
Between the demographics and the market structure German housing is completely different.0 -
