Black mark from other bank

Options
So I applied for a current account a few months ago. Card and pin got stolen from my mailbox and they managed to spend about £50 of overdraft before I realised it was stolen. They closed the account because they weren't satisfied that I did my due diligence which worried me but they said I couldn't do anything about it and will just have to apply for another account (but not with them). At least I wasn't liable for the overdraft and it looked like it wasn't in my Experian report. I didn't bother applying for another one. Fast forward to today when I got accepted for an account with another bank and subsequently had the account closed due to security checks (I literally got the pin & debit card & your account is closing letter on the same day) and I called them and they said that it's because I had a black mark from the previous and they do extra checks after you get approved. Apparently it'd be fine if I opened a basic account, it's just cause I wanted the slightly better account.

Now my questions are;
Is the black mark from the overdraft and they didn't remove it or is it from the old bank saying I'm not a diligent customer?
Are they allowed to black mark me for being a bad customer in their eyes?
I don't see anything on my Experian online report (it just lists the account as closed) so could it be with another rating agency?
Do they have another system?
Could I get the mark removed?
If so, who do I go to? They (the previous bank) has already told me it wouldn't be in my credit report (though they did say I would be blacklisted from them for a while). Do I go back and check with them?

Sorry for the long winded post and the questions. It just feels really frustrating that one mistake is going to affect me so much down the line. Any advice you could give would be appreciated.

Thanks

There are no black marks. Just data.

So what do your files say? All three, not just Experian.

If nothing shows there, it will be time to look at CIFAS.
  • So I managed to get the statutory report for all three. It just said that the back account that was closed was 'Settled'. I don't see anything in any report regarding a black mark. It does show that the account was only open for one month though, which does look suspicious, so I guess that could be the 'black mark' they saw? I'm not registered with CIFAS either.

Did the account show as settled but with an outstanding balance ?

Which bank are the accounts with ? If both are part of the same group it may be you are on their list of unwanted customers.

I take it youhave secured your mailbox ?

You do have the option of choosing to collect any cards etc from your local bramch, maybe this would be a more secure option.

Apologies if you have already done this.

Did the bank confirm what security process was used to activate the card? If they use date of birth or other personal information is it likely that the person that used the card is known to you?
  • They didn't have a process to activate the card, it was activated when they sent it to me and since the thief took it with the PIN, they could use the card. My flat management has taken steps to secure the mail now.

    I'm not on CIFAs either.

The two banks are TSB(the first bank) and Nationwide. I've written off TSB but what's troubling me now is that Nationwide opened an account for me online, closed it the next day, stating security reasons. I called them and asked for an explanation and assured me that it wouldn't be reflected in my credit report because they couldn't open my account in the first place. And guess what? It just showed up in my credit report. At this rate I'm worried about the one account I do have open with Lloyds and whether this spate of one month accounts is going to make them close my account with them as well.

I'm going to go to the Nationwide branch to get an explanation on this and to see if I can get the record expunged from my credit report.

The irony is I wanted two accounts for stability so that I have access to money in case something happened to one of them and I seemed to have just made matters worst.
