Hi.

Need a copy of OUTLOOK, don't think it matters which version, on a home computer ....

... being an ardent MSEer ... cheapest way to do this please.

(even running under XP in the short-ish term would be OK)

Any/all advice welcome

Cheers

You mean MS Outlook the email, calendar etc. programme that comes as part of MS office?

    Begs the question ... why?

If you have a PST file with emails in it - remember that it will require at least as a minimum the same release of Office as was used to create it. The version of Office will determine the minimum OS required to run it.

I'm intrigued as to why you would want to use Outlook at home.

    Good old Microsoft ...

We have an e mail program called Outlook ... we have a webmail system called Hotmail ..... I know, let's call the webmail system Outlook too, just to simplify things.

I found thunderbird really basic, I still use MS Office Outlook, it is way better than webmail and yet to see anything better.

I guess there are some on eBay but hard to know who to trust on there.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

If you're an employee you might be eligible for the Home User Program through your employer, where you can get Office for £9.99.

Otherwise you'll have to try and source a copy of Office from somewhere - I don't think you can obtain Outlook by itself.

As an aside, you can get IBM Notes (formerly Lotus Notes) free - not that many people seem to want it!

You can buy older copies of MS Outlook as part of the Office suite (2003 / 2007) for around £15 on eBay. Just get the seller to confirm that they have not exceeded the maximum number of licence installs. From memory 2003 was just a licence key and didn't require activation.

It is still possible to download Windows Live Mail which was a free follow up to the also free Outlook Express. I used this programme for a few years. It was good at the time but will probably look a bit dated now.

However, please remember that with any older software you run the risk of opening yourself up to security issues - and for this reason, I personally can not recommend them. For example, I love the look and feel of Office 2003 - but MS ended support for the product back in April 2014. So any security flaws exposed since then won't have been patched.

As others have suggested, ThunderBird is also a good email programme. However, if you specifically need to import an archive of old Outlook saved emails - then ThunderBird can't import .pst files (the old native file format used by Outlook).

Hope that helps. Thunderbird is probably the way to go. It is free, has a huge support community, and is still being developed / patched for security issues, etc.
