Switching utilities after DRO

Hi. I had a DRO granted on 3/5/17 and included in this were arrears with gas + electric with npower. I havn't received a letter from them yet but have spoken to their insolvency team and they said i should receive a letter in the near future maybe in a month or so .. basically with 2 options for my useage (keep prepayment for electric and swap the gas to pre-payment or pay them security deposit to stay on gas direct debit)

What i'm looking to do is switch to EDF as the tariff is better for us and saves us a lot of money over the year, they have said they will remove the electric pre-payment meter for free after i have been with them for 28 days and they won't charge a security deposit to pay by direct debit either.. unlike npower.

How soon should i start the switch? Can i do it today?
Also if i have credit on the pre-payment meter still when the switch completes what will happen to the credit?

Thanks
