Adjustable bed mattress sizes

Is a stated mattress size the actual mattress dimensions, or the dimensions of the bed it goes on to???
I know it sounds like an obvious/stupid question, I was certain it was the mattress dimensions, but I'm looking for a mattress for an electric/adjustable bed and it seems nearly every one is 6ft6 long, yet my bed FRAME measures 6"6 from top to bottom, so it seems to me a 6ft6 mattress would be a very tight squeeze.
Am I being really dim?

Sorry about that. My bed is 6'6" long, as is the mattress that sits on it.Doesn't really answer my question, but thanks for the reply.
The chart will tell you which mattress size will fit which bed width. Unless you have an Ikea bed, or other European one.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
Thanks, you've partly directly, and partly indirectly (made me realise some dumbness on my part) answered my question - I ideally need a 6ft6 mattress for a single adjustable bed.
Now back to shopping for one - if anyone has any recommendations for a seller of adjustable mattresses on a tight budget, would be much appreciated
