Being chased for a credit card debt we have already paid in full

I posted this in Debt free wanna be forum but i think it may be the wrong place.
This is the issue
My son had a credit card debt with Capital One. I paid it in full for him as he was being threatened with legal action by county court for a debt of £1800, which with the fees was £1930. We paid a company called Weightmans.com in oct 2015for the £1930 (i have the bank statement).
This week a company called Ruthbridge Ltd has phoned my son demanding payment of the original £1800. We sent them the copy of the bank statement showing £1930 paid, but they refuse to accept this as proof that the debt is paid. We contacted Weightmans by phone but they refuse to get involved or give us any information that could help to satisfy Ruthbridge Ltd.
What can we do to resolve this so that my son does not get chased for this debt again. We dont have any of the original paperwork, or even know what the credit card number was. Where do we start to untangle all of this? its a nightmare.
Any help and advice greatly appreciated

If you really have paid the debt, tell them to take you to court and you'll provide the proof as necessary.
If they don't accept it, I'm sure the court will. They are just trying it on.
Are you 100% sure this isn't another debt your son owes of similar value? And has neglected to tell you? Might be worth checking his credit reports with him. See if there is anything else owed.0 -
Its definately just the one card, also my son has phoned Capital One today and they have confirmed to him over the phone that they have no debt on record for him.
Our next step is to request proof of debt from Ruthbridge. If not they can issue a court summons and we will dispute it that way.0 -
