Is it worth paying more to protect NCD on car insurance?

Options
Hi I am looking to renew my car insurance. Last year I went with Prudential through Quidco and got a fantastic deal. I included all the trimmings....Protected No claims discount , legal cover and £0 voluntary excess. This year something has to give as the insurance seems to have gone up a lot.
I am now looking to go with another insurance company so that |I can get my Quidco cash back

I was wondering if the protected no claims was worth paying £40 for ? or should I look to increasing my voluntary excess?

I know it's a personal thing but would love to hear your comments.

TIA

I alway protect my NCD and hubby's for that matter. It's another insurance isn't it! I would be so annoyed if I lost it as it takes years to gain (we are on about 12 years each), makes a huge difference to your quote and for that £40 I believe it's worth paying.

But - as you rightly pointed out, it is a real personal choice, but for me - it ain't worth the risk of losing it!

    Plato ;) Make £2018 in 2018 no. 37 - total = £1626.25/£2018 :j

I have always protected mine and never claimed (until last week) so I make it 19 years. But I was told 9 nine years is the maxium you can have.

    Anyone else heard this?

  • generally speaking once you hit 5 years then thats your maximum - generaly 65% or 70%.

Above that whilst some insurers may slightly reduce your premiums for claims free years the impact will generally only be slight

I believe its worth protecting your NCB. It takes so long to gain it and with one claim, most of it if not all can be lost.

  • I'd always recommend protecting your no claims discount, which normally adds a loading of 10/12.5% to the premium, and usually an extra £50 excess on comprehensive cover. A no claims discount scale is generally as follows:

    65% maximum 4 years+ - reverted to 45% after 1 claim.
    50% 3 years - reverted to 30% after 1 claim.
    45% 2 years - reverted to 0% after 1 claim.
    30% 1 year - reverted to 0% after 1 claim.

Protecting your discount will also give you peace of mind (one of the reasons for having insurance) that if you have a claim you won't be whacked at the next renewal date.

  • yes i would strongly recommend protecting them. I had someone reverse into my car last year which was parked outside my house. The lady very kindly drove away before i could get to the front door. I would have had to pay this on my insurance but luckily i caught up with the lady so and so a week later ( after she'd had her car repaired) and after a few strong words she gave me her details and admitted it. So no charge to me in the end..... but i would have been a it pee'd off if anythin else was to happen and i lost my ncd.

BTW the woman had a very hefty fine and a few points on her licence for the trouble :-)
