P800 Question

Hi there,
Can anyone offer some advice on a P800 issue. I received a letter today saying I owed HMRC £479 for the period up to April 2016...yes 2016. But had not yet received the full P800 for 16/17. I have received P800 forms in the past which stated that I had under payments, and any under payment would come out of my tax the following year, so I'm bemused as to how I owe this much all of a sudden. I did have a P800 say one year that I owed £86 and it would come out of the following years tax, but when I received the following years P800, the £86 was added to the amount I owed for that year as an adjustment! Double dip? also when I called HMRC They had my salary on their system as 3x what I actually earn!! So something strange going on!, foolishly I set up a direct debit with HMRC to address the outstanding amount, but I think there must be some mistake. I changed jobs two months ago and before that I was with same employer for 4 years. Thanks!!

You might check the above.
Check your own records and work out tax payable for 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Do you think any part of the P800 calculation is actually wrong? Although not impossible to be underpaid, 4 years with the same employer tends to help keep things on an even keel in the longer term although employer benefits such as company cars or medical insurance can contribute to tax underpayments.
As xylophone says you can check it against your own info but that should be straightforward if you only had one employer in the year to April 2016.0
