Cracked Ka windscreen
Hi , my daughter's Ford Ka (2010) has a 25cm horizontal crack so I'm guessing needs replacing not repairing.
How much is a reasonably good quote to fix this (sadly we're no 'martin lewis' sassy hagglers)
Also she is with Admiral car insurance which has windscreen cover but i'm reluctant to call on it as it will then be registered as a claim and as an 18 year old , doesn't need much of a premium hike next year to outweigh the windscreen cost - Would you claim or pay?
thanks

You, or your daughter, may only have to pay the £75 excess & I dont think it will class as a claim as long as you use one of their recommended companies.Admiral wrote:Windscreen repair and replacement cover is included in Admiral’s comprehensive policies as standard and can be purchased as an added extra on other policies.
Our cover includes an excess of £75 for windscreen replacement and £25 repair if you do need to make a windscreen related claim. You should always check your policy schedule to confirm these excesses.Dwy galon, un dyhead,

Yes, a 25cm crack is definitely beyond repair...! It'd also be an MOT fail if it's in the wiper swept area (the limit is 40mm, or 10mm if in front of the driver).
Glass claims don't normally hike your premium - Admiral may find any excuse, but you will (I presume) be shopping around at renewal anyway. The big-name national as-seen-on-TV windscreen firms tend to be extortionate and poor quality. Find your local small glass fitters, and ask them for a quote, if you're paying yourself. You can usually use them and reclaim from your insurer, but the excess may be slightly higher. Personally, I will always do this, as I've had such abysmal work in the past from the big names.0 -

Since march 2014 that's not necessarily true. Special Notice 2-14 amended the criteria so that damage is only a fail if it "materially affects the driver's view of the road." Damage which is in the way of the bonnet or the sky doesn't fail even if it meets the earlier criteria re size and position.

Depending on the model it "may" have a heated windscreen which is very expensive so may be best to use insurance.0 -
Been reported and PPR'd - why still able to postJoe_Horner wrote: »Go away you tedious little troll.0 -
In reply to "The big-name national as-seen-on-TV windscreen firms tend to be extortionate and poor quality", that was my experience as well. When I phoned up one of the big national chains, they quoted a very high price, and then tried to pressure me into supplying my insurance details.
In the end, I claimed through my insurance, paid a £50 excess, and the job was done by a local company. It didn't affect my premium.0 -
Claim on your insurance; that's what its there for. A windscreen claim has to be declared if you try to obtain insurance elsewhere but should not have much, if any, impact on the quote.0

Thanks for the replies folks.
We've had one quote back at £195 + vat , not heard from the others yet so will ring round tomorrow to see if we can beat that.
It's not a heated screen but the crack is at eye level ; the stone hit right near the edge of the screen and the crack moved in horizontally from there.
unless we beat that quote it seems not going through insurance is going to cost us about £160 ( £195+vat -£75 excess) so I suppose i need to guess if 5 years of declaring that will cost less or more.0
