Haha its rare most people I speak to don't really know what procurement is. I am currently doing my Procurement exams (CIPS) and I can assure its much more than buying toilet roll and tea bags :)

Does the exam have an Ethics module? As buyer, the opportunity for kick back is constant. I believe all the professional exams have a token module for ethical conduct, but the financial industry obviously clean forgot it. Nick Leeson went to Singapore, and went Rogue. Must be the heat. ;)

The French nobility had procuresses to get them young boys and girls, according to Marquis de Sade. The Chinese emperors had people scouring the country for beautiful tributes.

When I make enough money, and own my own country, preferably China, I will need a good Procurement department.

Sadly, I think I will be too old to enjoy it. Still, a nice summer palace in Qingdao would be good. Arup has some experience in Dongtan.

In your opinion how much would you say I need in the bank prior to moving? Have you got any tips as do where would be a good place to look for expat jobs in Singapore. I am actually Chinese and born in Scotland so speak Cantonese and currently learning mandarin.

The expatistan website is useful for getting cost of living but as a rough guide renting a furnished studio flat in a normal (not expensive) area in Singapore is the equivalent of just over £1000 per month. When we were there eating out was fairly expensive but I am not sure about supermarket costs. Travel costs are also fairly expensive but I would say you need to allow at least £2500 per month and I would take sufficient for 6 months and allow enough for the airfare home should you not find a job. I would imagine though you will need to find a sponsor and ideally a job before going out. I am not sure how easy procurement jobs are to find. Knowing the language though is a definite advantage.

The module does have a lot of emphasis on ethic and CSR throughout various chapters. As a buyer the use of giving back and using ethical processes (eg no animal testing) and the use of local suppliers are encouraged. I am sure most manufacturing organization could make you of a good procurement team as they are generally in a good place to oversee the organization as a whole and working with several different people and functions.

Having researched the country I have decided to go on holiday to Hong Kong and Singapore at the start of 2018 to get a feel for the country. Obviously working and living there is different to visiting there as a holiday but going by the things i have read, it definitely is high on my list to at least give it try. Moving there would only be on the basis of landing a job and negotiating a package that would be viable to my personal financial situation at the given time.

Language wise, you have a chance to get into the Hong Kong office.

    Try this at the interview:

    Rose scented toilet paper!

Even the Waldorf doesn't have scented toilet paper. ;)

    Although Aloe scented is available.
