Edward Elgar £20 Notes

Hi all, hope someone can help.
I just got given a few hundred pounds of old £20 notes.
I've checked the Bank Of England pages and that says I have to take them to BoE in London to cash them in.
The person who gave them to me told me that high street banks will take them as a deposit into an account.
We bank with Santander.
Can anyone confirm if they will take them or do I need to make the trip to the big smoke?
TIA

The BBC said this back in 2010 when the notes were withdrawn:
"Banks, building societies and Post Offices will still accept them for a few months, but they are not legally obliged to exchange them for the replacement - a £20 note featuring economist Adam Smith."
As it's now long past 'a few months' I'd be surprised if any high street financial institution will still take them.
You're wrong when you say that the BoE says you have to take them to London:
"All withdrawn Bank of England notes remain payable at face value for all time. They can be exchanged for new banknotes at the Bank of England, either in person in London or by post."

And how to do it by post:

Gah, I edited my post before sending and 2 sentences got a bit mixed up!
Yes, I know I can post but I live close enough that it's easier for me to take them in person.0 -

In my experience, banks will still take them but you have to use a counter not an automatic pay in machine..0

Take them to whatever bank you have an account with; unless you have thousands of quids' worth I expect they'll deposit or exchange them for you. If they don't, use the Bank of England service and consider changing banks as it's really quite routine for them to accept noncirculating decimal notes and coins.: )0

You should be able to pay them into your account over the counter.
I still accept the old notes, they seem to come about when people die and family clear out homes and they find stashes of notes around the home.
Santander should take them into your account, you may find you cant just swop them as there needs to be a audit trail.

Makes me feel old seeing them!
The £5 note had George Stephenson and his Rocket Locomotive and the £10 featured Charles Dickens and a scene from the Pickwick Papers? It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Thanks all.
Santander accepted them this morning, no questions asked.0
