Advice/Tips for preparing original floorboards for painting

Im in the process of lifting the carpet in one of my rooms because we want to paint the floorboards. Any general advice as well as covering these points would be really helpful:

- Gaps between floorboards, best solution to fill them?
- On the whole floorboards are in reasonable condition but there are a few holes but not too big, dont think a new floorboard is necessary so what should I be using to fill these gaps?
- Bit uneven in places and im guessing I have to live with it
- Best paint to use?

Im going to sand it down a bit so its smoother and takes the paint we will eventually use. Thanks :)
