with it running squirt some wd40 onto the belt as it goes round it may shut the noise up or alter it which if it does the belt is worn.0

To everyone who's offering suggestions - thanks, I appreciate it.
I've just done a 5 mile drive in the car and it still sounds the same when warm. The rhythm of the noise does seem to speed up the faster the car goes if that helps.
I'm at work in the car now, and I must admit, I'm a bit reluctant to drive it anymore as don't want to end up trashing the engine.0 -
Just thought I'd update the thread...due to my lack of mechanical skills, I've opted to get the car looked at in the garage so have it booked in for tomorrow. Hopefully won't be too expensive of a job, but at least when we sell the car, we can do so knowing everything's working as it should.0

Just to update the thread, spoke to the garage earlier and the alternator belt needs replacing. While they've got the car, they're also going to do the timing belt kit as the car's done 83k and at least I'll know it's all been sorted before we sell the car.0
