Help! Received a letter about a parking charge from 3 years ago!

Hi
Recently I received a letter stating I had to pay £179 for a parking fine that I hadn't paid from 2014!
I didn't receive any Proof of where this parking was or any pictures showing me just a letter saying the fine was from 2014.
I ignored the first letter but now have received a letter saying they will proceed with a court claim to retrieve the money.
This obviously makes people panic so I tried calling the number with no joy straight to answering machine I did ask them to call me back but no call back as of yet just looking for some advice on what to do?
Should I answer the call or just ignore them?
I haven't admitted anything, I'm more in shock it's from 3 years ago? I don't even have the car anymore.

Any advice would be helpful

Who sent you this letter a debt collector or the parking company themselves?

I would be tempted to write back with a simple "this debt is denied" statement simply because they might be on a bit of a fishing trip. Many people move after a length of time and one or two companies do seem to like getting default court judgements on people that have moved.

A short denial letter just lets them know you are still on the ball. Other opinions may vary.
  • The letter is from tnc on behalf on everything parking
No information in the letter of where the parking fine is for or pictures as proof

Debt collectors then. They are toothless senders of letters. If you want to do something do as I suggested before. Send a very short letter just saying this debt is denied please refer it back to your principal. Leave it at that. Don't be tempted to go into long explanations.

Wait for other opinions before doing anything though. It's good to hear a variety of opinions.

Just a debt collector, so post #4 of the NEWBIES FAQs thread covers it.

Whatever you do, no phoning a debt collector! For the love of God, why oh why do so many people do that?! I can't believe anyone would think that's a good idea. Rant over.

If they call you, tell them to cease & desist as it is harassment of a registered keeper and you require any contact to be only by letter. Mention the harassment case of Ferguson v British Gas (Google it).
