Energy Tariffs

After months of making excuses to myself (too busy / not the right time / too much hassle, etc) I finally did two things today to try and save money on my energy bills. 1) I went on a price comparison website (it took just one minute to do so and get results). 2) I picked up the phone to my existing energy supplier to speak to a real person to see if they could move me to a cheaper tariff. Within the space of 10 minutes I had saved myself £185 a year by transferring from their standard gas and electric tariffs to their dual fuel online only account.

I'm just trying to be helpful by pointing out that if like me you are on a standard tariff then in less than 10 minutes you can save yourself a couple of hundred pounds a year. My home is small, so I'm sure other people could make even bigger savings.

I doubt that many using these forums are using standard rates, unless they have no option because of a recent house move.

It is because so many of the population have not bothered to fix /transfer, that the government intends to limit the difference between variable rates and fixes (supposedly to help the majority ), but it will just mean that the suppliers will offer poorer deals to those who make the effort.

Alas, you are preaching to the converted.

This is MSE, paying standard tariff (spit please) is sacrilege.

    Ten Hail Marys at least.

Having consulted a comparison site as you did, it should have come as no surprise what the best deal from your current supplier would be.
You should also have been able to see what difference exists between that best offering from your current supplier compared to the whole of market.

Indeed, MSE Martin in his TV shows does suggest anyone on a suppliers standard variable tariff at least move to the supplier's lower cost alternative.

This is helpful for anyone nervous of switching supplier (don't be - there really is nothing to fear) or your existing supplier's best deal offers little saving over the best of the whole of market.
The other advantage of simplying transfering tariff with the existing supplier is that it usually can occur immedaitely as opposed to a minimum of 17 days a switch application will take.

It's always good to point out that moving to a different tariff with your existing supplier can save a lot of money and be stress free!

...unless the standard tariff happens to be the cheapest option. [kindly add to post]. ;)

Was your existing (presumably Big Six) supplier really the cheapest fix though?

British gas electric standard rate is cheap but it's going up.

    :rotfl:

I shall switch myself over to one of those nice high standing charge tariffs today as penance ;)

I expect I'll have to anyway when the new Government's price cap comes in
