My understanding is that NHS has entered into such an agreement with MS ..

This ransomewear should be a wake up call to all who don't have a recover in place .

    Hi

Luckily things like dispensing pumps for diamorphine etc are not IOT, and wont have an access port to calibrate etc and wont necessarily be running an OS that has AV or Firewall or any kind of security, OOH! could I be mistaken?

Appently (so you know this is true) Eugene Kaspersky has an OS that will circumvent all threats from the internet for IOT devices like hospital equipment and factory processing stuff.

So perhaps the NHS should immediately shut down all its kit and await such an install.

The serious point is the NHS has much more than PC's that are vulnerable and most of it defenceless against such attacks.

I would hope that they are running dumb clients and that all data should be on secure servers so all that should be necessary is to re-image all impacted clients with a (hopefully now patched) new image. Still a massive task.

Perhaps they should be using mainframes and 3270s? There were never any issues with viruses in my day. I'd be prepared to come out of retirement for a £5k a day consultancy fee to put them back on the right track :)

Probably because they have read above about the problems of bespoke software. There is bespoke software being used where there is no upgrade from XP to win7 then on to Win10. A lot didn't even have Linux version.

Most bespoke software is written for a Windows platform. There is no Linux version of a lot of them.

also in the past 20 odd years their has been 2 (I think!?!? one at least!!) separate failed attempts to create a new IT system for the NHS.

It's a massive undertaking that would have taken 10-15 years to roll out fully! By which time the OS and equipment specs would be massively out of date and you would probably end up in the same sort of situation as we're in now! just a few billion £ poorer... lol

The sickening £12 billion NHS fiasco

    and never used I believe.

You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

    Aren't they still running XP?

From what I heard the ransomware is a new variant that was released today. It's main method of propagation is a worm deriving from an NSA hack that was recently leaked. This is what was patched in March.
Most of the so called NHS IT managers are probably looking at dodgy internet sites for most of their working day and have inadvertently downloaded something on their XP computers..
