There really is overkill on bathrooms now. My brother has a 4 bedroomed house and they have a downstairs cloakroom and ensuite in the main bedroom and another bathroom. Until recently there were 5 of them (all adults) living there and they seemed to manage ok. Even 2 bed flats will often have an ensuite plus another bathroom now.

On a very different matter, I even sometimes even wonder if we're better off for having separate TV sockets in every room, specially kids rooms, or wifi that reaches beyond reception rooms in a house.

  • We bought a 3 bed new build about a year ago. There's only myself and the wife living here, and there's 3 bathrooms.

There's the downstairs 'cloakroom' which I love because who wants to have to go upstairs to use the toilet?

There's the ensuite attached to our bedroom which is the one we tend to use as the main bathroom as it is the one with the shower cubicle in it.

Then there's the 'family' bathroom which doesn't really ever get used. I think the wife had a bath in it once and we had guests staying over once, but that was it. I probably wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there.

Where I live, kids usually have their own bathroom. Sometimes one each.

    I generally think it's a good thing.

Adult bathrooms have different requirements to child bathrooms. Adult bathrooms lean towards large showers, extra counter space and luxury (non kid friendly) bath tubs and the child bathroom type is smaller with an easier access bathtub and overall more practicality for smaller people.
Clearly I and my sibling had a severely deprived childhood then as there was only one bathroom for the whole family. How we managed I do not know.

Having gone from a house with 1 toilet to a house with 4 toilets I can tell you it is magic. In the old house as soon as my backside touched the seat the wife or kid was knocking on the door. Now I can tell them to P*** off to another toilet and read my magzine in peace.

One negative aspect is that with having a three year old, every single day every toilet in the house has a skid mark in the front of the pan. I think it has become a game to him :rotfl:

I'm using mine as a cupboard, can't relax and use a loo that's right by the front door! :rotfl:

I think the number of bathrooms is ok for the house in the OP, it's got enough space for them that they don't feel squeezed in or th like the bedrooms are tiny to make room. In modern smaller houses though I think any more than 2 is usually a waste of space. One upstairs, one downstairs for elderly/less mobile family members.
  • We are currently attempting to buy a relatively new 2 bed flat. It has two bathrooms! Why I have no idea. We'd quite like to turn the one that is ensuite to the master bedroom into a walk in wardrobe or storage cupboard but were worried that people now expect more than one bathroom even in a small flat. Good to see there is still some sanity in the world!

I'm with you; when we were looking last year, we were baffled by the amount of toilets in some homes. Our place has one large bathroom and one toilet - there's a half-loft conversion, and when we do the other side, we won't bother putting in an en-suite.

Id' rather have more storage space and less to clean.

And I can't stand bogs that feel like cupboards, with no window.

Mind you, someone shut me in a freezer room when I was a child!
