Electric shower unit fitted in daft place - but is it safe?

We have a small (70cm I think) corner shower unit in our en suite.
When the plumber fitted the electric shower I asked him to put the shower head unit on one wall and the control unit on the other.
Which he did but he plumbed the latter so it sits at elbow height - which I was annoyed about because the sensible place to put it would be head height, up out of the way.
But that aside it is, at least partially, in the line of the shower's flow, and will get soaked every time someone has a shower.
Now I know these things are made for a damp environment etc etc, but could this be a problem?

Not a good idea to have water spraying directly onto an electric shower unit.

Seems odd to ever have it at waist height, i would never think of doing that unless you have someone who has particular needs for it to be that low.
I would ask him to move it? Although it may now mean disruption to finished work surfaces...

Indeed. It's more chest height, still silly place to put it.

    Thanks both

Clearly a plumber who doesn't seem to understand that bringing a spray of water close to electricity is not a good idea! It might be safe at the moment (though I'm not sure I would feel safe using it), but you are relying on the seals on the control unit working 100% and never deteriorating. Since it would be quite disruptive to move the control unit higher, how about moving the shower holder rail instead, to just to the right of the control unit? I realise this wasn't your original plan. There will be two holes left in the right-hand wall, but the top one could be filled in and the bottom one used for a soap holder, hook for shampoo bottle, etc.

It looks in about the right place to me, approx 1200-1300mm of the deck

Why on earth would you specify shower and rail on different walls? This is more a design fault than the location of the shower unit

  • That's not safe at all, if it's anything like my shower there won't be any seals in it, they're just designed to shed splashes and drips. Mine's on the same wall as the rose, same height as the rose, and outside the shower curtains.

    What a load of tosh

Unless they have been very badly fitted i.e. Siliconed around they are more than suitable to be in the wet/splash area . They all have drainage slots and seals

Agreed, they should have seals. Even so, it's probably better not to have to rely on them. From page 29 of that Mira guide: "Most electric shower units are supplied with a slide bar mounted handset and flexible hose. ..... It should be mounted adjacent to the heater unit, close to the centre line of the showering area." As I said above, it may be easier to move the slide bar rather than the unit..

It wouldn't have taken much of your time to put a pencil mark on the walls where you wanted the showerhead and main unit...
You delegated the choice of height to him and he got it horribly wrong.
