What you failed to mention about that Which report is that the Tempur mattress beat ALL of the pocket sprung mattresses tested in the critical area of performance (body support, lower back support and pressure minimisation).
Another thing is that they used a very flawed durability test for testing the Tempur. If it wasn't for that flawed test, the Tempur would have scored much higher and would have been close to or at the very top of the leaderboard.
It doesn't give the best support as can be seen in the Which report.
The highest scores in the Which report for performance (body support, lower back support and pressure minimisation) were given to reflex foam/memory foam mattresses. These top scoring mattresses scored higher than all of the pocket sprung mattresses tested for support and pressure minimisation.
At least you got the first part right. Springs can bend and lose their shape over time. They don't last as long as foam.
Are you going to declare your interests or not??
You only come on here to cause arguments because you obviously sell Tempur mattresses. You can't even say why you think the tests that rated Tempur bottom were flawed. You also use very selective editing when quoting me (making sure you don't quote all my valid points).
As I have said before, I do sell memory foam mattresses including reflex/memory foam. I actually make most profit on reflex foam/memory foam because they aren't on special offer. So if I was going to promote any type of mattress for pesonal gain then it would be the reflex/memory foam.
The whole reason that I come on MSE is as an expert in the field to give helpful advice to people who are often given false information by sales reps.0 -

The only reason I am on this forum is that I don't like seeing people being misled by salesmen. That is the same reason you gave for being here. The difference is that I don't sell mattresses for a living like you do. I have thoroughly researched memory foam mattresses and own a few. That is why I know something about them.
The durability test done on the Tempur is flawed because such tests are not designed to test memory foam mattresses. A slow-release memory foam, such as that used to make up the Tempur, does not have time to recover before the next pass of the roller presses against the mattress. These are the reasons why that test is flawed.
You have attacked my motives for posting, but why don't you talk about the FACTS instead?
The FACT is that the highest scores in the Which report for performance (body support, lower back support and pressure minimisation) were given to reflex foam/memory foam mattresses. These top scoring mattresses scored higher than all of the pocket sprung mattresses tested for support and pressure minimisation.
If you can't show me how these facts are wrong then you should stop claiming that pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses offer the best support for the body. Such claims you are making are wrong according to the facts from the Which report.0 -

I'm sorry I don't believe you. You come on here simply to try and discredit everything I say.
You say you have done a lot of research, well with the things you are coming out with I'd say you need to do more. It is obvious to me that you have been reading alot from the Tempur propoganda web sites which are set up to look independent, but aren't.The durability test done on the Tempur is flawed because such tests are not designed to test memory foam mattresses. A slow-release memory foam, such as that used to make up the Tempur, does not have time to recover before the next pass of the roller presses against the mattress. Yes the tests are flawed, but not for the reason you mention (which is the Tempur excuse straight out of a Tempur propoganda web site).
The roller tests are taken from the FIRA tests (you should know who they are if you have done your research) which are designed to test durability of the mattresses. What Tempur didn't expain in their excuse is why their mattress did so badly compared to all the others.
The way the tests were flawed was:
1) Because they didn't test a wide enough variety of memory foam mattresses.
2) Out of the ones they did test none of the mattresses were 2 sided, in fact they wrongly stated that you can't get 2 sided memory foam mattresses.
3) The mattress that came out bottom on the sprung/memory foam category was the Sealy. This mattress is not pocket sprung, it actually contains the Sealy PostureTech Ultra mattress spring system which is similar (but improved) to the troublesome Miracoil system made by Silentnight, which is closer to open coil springs than pocket springs. The Myers Conforma has a similar spring system, but I have recently been informed that Myers are no longer trading.
4) There are only 3 pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses in the test, of which none of them are 2 sided, and one of them is a Slumberland who aren't very good anyway.
5) Some of the overall score is measured on convenience and ease of use. Well sprung mattresses don't come vacuum packed and rolled up. Sprung mattresses will allways be heavier than foam. And until very recent developments all pocket sprung mattresses were hand tufted, so like most mattresses on the market they wouldn't have removable covers. So it isn't worth even using this as a comparison, as it would be like compairing a van to a sports car (they are both very good at what they do).You have attacked my motives for posting, but why don't you talk about the FACTS instead?
You actually copied my quote from another thread into this one, so you know that I have given all the facts. The FACT is that the highest scores in the Which report for performance (body support, lower back support and pressure minimisation) were given to reflex foam/memory foam mattresses. These top scoring mattresses scored higher than all of the pocket sprung mattresses tested for support and pressure minimisation.
Like I said they only tested 3 pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses, but tested 12 reflex foam/memory foam mattresses, so it's not a very good comparison is it?
I have explained this before in another thread (as you know). If you take a reflex only foam mattress and push down with your hand, it will also compress the surrounding area. If you do this with an open coil sprung mattress it will do the same (even more). If you do this with a pocket sprung mattress then only the springs under your hand will be compressed. So common sense will tell you that pocket springs will follow the contours of your body better than the others. If you can't show me how these facts are wrong then you should stop claiming that pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses offer the best support for the body. Such claims you are making are wrong according to the facts from the Which report.
I have now shown you why all the above facts you mentioned were wrong. I have also proved that even though you say you have done extensive research, that you have also been mislead.
The reason why Healthbeds came out top in both categorys is quite simple:
1) Healthbeds use an excellent quality British made memory foam made by 'British Vitafoam'.
2) Healthbeds use the optimum depth of memory foam which is between 2" and 2.5". Many other manufacturers use layers of memory foam that are simply too deep, or are the wrong density, and try conning customers into thinking that more memory foam is better and charging them more for it.
Now as I have said previously, I make more profit from selling reflex foam/memory foam mattresses because the pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses are on special offer. The advice I give on here is only to help people, and not to make sales. This is why my user name is my actual name, and is not my business name or my ebay user name, and in fact isn't even close to it. So I don't actually benefit from the information I give out on here. I do however know about mattresses (unlike many sales reps), and as you would see from my 100% feedback on ebay I am well known for my honesty.0 -

That is a tad cynical. I come here because I see people being misled and I don't like it. There is nothing wrong with discrediting information that I think is incorrect.Tim_Deegan wrote: »You say you have done a lot of research, well with the things you are coming out with I'd say you need to do more. I never got that information from any Tempur website or from any website that is associated with them. The site I got it from does not mention Tempur when talking about the durability test. What they say is that the durability test is not designed for memory foam mattresses and especially not for mattresses with slow-recovery memory foam. The Tempur uses slow-recovery memory foam so that information applies to the Tempur mattress.Tim_Deegan wrote: »I have explained this before in another thread (as you know). You explained the theory but the scores for support and pressure prove it doesn't work as well as you have been saying.
You won't talk about the scores for support and pressure in that Which report. The pocket sprung mattresses did not do that great.Tim_Deegan wrote: »I have now shown you why all the above facts you mentioned were wrong. Do you really sell reflex foam/memory foam mattresses as you are claiming? Because I searched over 100 of your listings on ebay and could not find even one listing for a reflex foam/memory foam mattress. All your mattresses there were of the sprung variety.
So be honest. Are you selling any reflex foam/memory foam mattresses on ebay?
If you are not selling reflex foam/memory foam mattresses then your advice is not going to be impartial as you claim it is and you will also have been deliberately misleading people on this forum.0
