Credit card soft check - worth doing and which one?

Are these soft checks Martin talks about worth doing or not? I have heard conflicting opinion where some saying it is meaningless. If there is value I am looking for something that won't count against my eligibility by making a mark or require handing over my personal information for marketing. Does this exist?

I found one oo MSE one but this just seems to be Experian which I was told wasn't very useful.

    Told by who?
The eligibility checker will give you a reasonable idea of the sort of card that you are likely to be accepted for. Obviously you will have to give personal information as your eligibility could not be assessed without such information.

They are around 70% accurate as once you go to full application there are other criteria at play
  • Can anyone recommend any good 0% cards that have accurate soft checkers please? Thanks!

Used checks twice, twice they said i would be apprived and twice i wasnt. They may be useful for those to check before applying if they will get rejected but the opposite is not true.

Exactly, these seem to be good for those with problematic credit from making it even worse by needlessly applying. I don't have a problematic history, never been in debt, etc. and while I have 2 credit cards (Lloyds and Barlcys) the one I want (Halifax Clarity) has rejected me twice in the previous 3 years.

So why does Martin make such a song and dance about it then?

    Referral fees?
  • It's really irresponsible to put out a tool that is that inaccurate.

A lot of people's lives could be changed for the better by switching to a 0% card - you can literally reduce the amount you are paying on interest by £100s per month after switching.

If you are put off from applying after getting a low score on the 'soft check' then that's a real shame!
