Basic Bank Account or Card with Direct Debit

Am a hearing-impaired (no phone), 83yrs-young bloke, renting (no utility bills in my name), a passport and photocard driving licence which are no longer needed/used/renewed (can't get out much), no debts/cards. Have one of Yorkshire's current accounts, which they're now cancelling and won't offer a Basic Bank Account. Can any bank or card provider accept my DWP letter and/or expired passport/DL so that I can have an account for my pension + direct debit? Thanks.

The key thing will be for you to be on the electoral register, if you are then it should be possible for you to get a new account, if you aren't then it could prove difficult. If you do it before your Yorkshire (is that Bank or Building Society?) account is closed that will help too. If it's Yorks Bank then using the Current Account Switching Service may make it easier too.

You'd probably have a best chance going into your most local bank branch with your passport and DWP letter.

Do you mean that you have a Norwich and Peterborough current account?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/personal-banking/current-accounts/norwich-peterborough-current-account-customer-should-do/

I assume that your pension amounts to at least £500 a month - perhaps a TSB plus would do - you could manage it entirely on-line.

The YBS says all N&P current accounts will be closed on 31 August 2017, and it will do the following:

Write to customers to provide details of how they can switch or close their accounts, along with info specific to their personal circumstances.
Direct customers to the Money Advice Service for impartial advice about current accounts.
Once a customer has chosen a new current account provider they need to provide it with their N&P current account details (to initiate a manual switch).
N&P will give the new provider details of any regular payments so these can be set up on the new account.
Arrange to transfer any account balance to the new account, and then close the N&P account when the customer or new provider asks it to do so.
For personal accounts, all benefits such as free card use abroad, Visa debit card and cheque payments, Sentinel Gold cover, overdraft and fee-free buffer will continue until the accounts are closed.
