Confused and scared to switch

Hi everyone. I've been a fan of this site for many years, but one thing I can't bring myself to do is switch energy suppliers. I have done it twice, and both times it was a terrible experience. The two times I switched I has massively inflated bills over what i was paying before and spent a lot of time arguing with the supplier to reduce the bill.

The first time was in the early day of switching and I think I was just ripped off. The second time seems to have been because of a faulty meter reading by the supplier that added hundreds of pounds onto my yearly bill. They finally agreed to reduce it to an average of what I was paying before.

Anyway. I'm on a variable tarif with edf now and pay 720 a year for duel fuel. 2 bedroom flat and we a fairly careful. I think that's quite good, but of course would like to save.
Now I have my kwh from edf. 9000 a year for gas and 1630 for electric. When I put these figures into the comparison site I'm getting results of saving a thousand pounds on a two thousand plus bill. Am I entering the figures wrong?

The Kwh written 1,630 but on the money saving comparison can only be written 1630. According to the site I can save 1,364 pounds on a calculated bill of 3,881. Help.

    No need to scare

just enter the details to comparison site, then look at the top 5 Fixed tariff.
Check who got better customer rating of those 5 and switch.

Even you don't want to switch, it didn't stop you to ring your current supplier and ask them to put you to the cheapest fixed 12 month tariff (exit fee could apply).
You just need to keep a date on your diary for the end day of the existing fixed tariff.

BTW, you probably enter figure the wrong way round?
I don't know where you are living, but if I put your figure with my post code, the bill is in region of £600.

I think you may have added another zero when inputting the numbers.
Which comparison site did you use?
A simple site is the Citizens Advice Bureau at https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/ as it only asks a few questions and doesn't save the information.

I did your figures for my region (prices vary by region) and the best offer was priced at £567.63 saving £195.45 from the EDF standard tariff

I also added an extra zero to the electric and the figures went up to £2000+ and saving £1000+ so that was most likely the fault with your comparison site results.

By the way the CAB site just ignores the commas if you type them and show the number 1,630 as 1630 on screen.

1630 is an annual figure - are you entering them as monthly ?

If the box you are entering has space for 5 figures then you should use only the last 4 or enter as 01630 (like you do when you enter readings on line)

Similarly for gas - use the kwh figure you have, not meter readings as they are in cubic meters of cubic feet.

thanks everyone. I am using the martin's money saving energy club for the comparison. I've double checked and am entering the figures correctly and for the year. Perhaps there is a bug in the site.

It might be that you've got the wrong tariff selected, or the tariff data is wrong. It should tell you what the standard charge and unit rates are for your current tariff.

OK. Got it now. I had not changed the electric to year. I've switched.

That's good news - these tariff problems often boil down to basic mistakes or mis-reading of meters.
