Which bank account without online spending?

Hey guys,

Basically I am in a large amount of debt. I could easily repay it over time. But my issue is online spending! I've had the debt for a long time and it's time I change my ways.

I've been hunting for a account/card that I can use for cash withdraws only and top up by direct debit from my Halifax account. But obviously the important bit is it can't be used online at all.

The plan is to give control of my Halifax account to my partner (the password/card etc) and setup all my outgoing bills and payments towards overdraft/credit card via standing orders. Then have a direct debt each week/month of X amount to the card that can't be used online for my daily expenses. I will be ringing my credit card provider today and getting them to freeze the account so I can only repay it and not spend on it anymore.

Sadly I am unable to find a cash only card, ethier I am looking for it under the wrong name. Or the banks are hiding them well! Any help with be great thanks guys.

Putting aside the issue of treating the symptom rather than the cause, it sounds like your best bet will be a savings account with a cash card, rather than a bank account where a debit card is pretty much standard. How about http://www.ybs.co.uk/savings/online/internet-saver.html for example? This can be funded by standing order from other accounts and has a cash-only card....

Santander have a Basic Bank Account. There are two cards. One is used in the normal way for withdrawing cash and etc but can not be used for online purchases or for shopping. The other card is a "top-up" card and can be used online and for shopping. You could cut up or bin the top-up card and just use the basic account card.

Barclays are introducing features to control your debit card for atm withdrawals and online spending. Would they be suitable for You?

Eskbanker has suggested the same account that I would have, it's one that I use, although I'm running it down as they have cut the interest rate so much now. The only issue is that you won't be able to top it up by Direct Debit, but there are very few accounts where that's possible anyway as generally retail customers cannot create DDs on their accounts.

Yes, my reading of what OP wanted to do was to transfer funds from one account to another on a regular scheduled basis, so a standing order from their Halifax current account should suffice, but if there is a genuine requirement for this transfer to be handled specifically by a direct debit as such (I don't know why this would be) then I agree that it wouldn't be practical as a means to fund this YBS account!

another option would be to use a shopping block type software, similar to children or gambling blocks.
https://gamban.com/ is one for gambling for example.

Hi, my understanding is that banks now all offer debit cards - they used to do cash machine only cards but were criticised for excluding people from the benefits of debit cards.

You would therefore need a current account, which will have a debit card. The easiest thing to do would be to have a savings account with another bank (or you would be able to access both using your savings account internet banking) and have the money transferred across. Cut up the debit card and your partner can transfer money over to the savings account as needed.

HOWEVER I do wonder if this is the best way to handle this. What will you do when you have repaid your debt? Is this how you will live all your life? The suggestion above about restricting internet access to online shopping is a good one.

I need to reign things in after my partner became unemployed. We were living comfortably, but not so much any more. What I am doing is opening a new current account with the Bank of Scotland which I will use for day to day spending. My bills and direct debits will come out of another account I have with TSB. I'll get my salary paid into the Bank of Scotland, and have a standing order set up for my pay day which will transfer the amount I need in the TSB account. That way, whatever is in the Bank of Scotland is mine to spend, and I know my bills are all taken care of.

I did much the same when I started my IVA, have an account for day to day, and one for salary and bills, the day to day one gets one credit a month, and when it's gone it's gone

Tesco Instant Access Saver? Has the cash card you mention and allows direct debits in. It only pays 0.25% interest but if you are only transferring in a small amount of spending money, it shouldn't be a problem.

As it's a savings account, you also won't need to pass a credit check to get it.

You are looking for any savings account with ATM cards, sometimes called cash cards, they are not current accounts and they dont have access to set up standing orders or Direct debits on them as they are savings accounts.

You are able to fund the account by transfer or SO. Can view online and transact if you wish but you wont be ablate use it on website to pay for anything as its a savings account or cashcard.

    Halifax
    Natwest
    Tesco
    Sainsburys

Also just be careful giving your card and online banking password over this is not encouraged and you may find problems if you have any fraud on your accounts as the first question asked is does anyone else know or have access to your card or online banking details, if you say yes they may not cover any unauthorised payments as you have put your money at risk by sharing your details...

Good luck with saving, and reducing your debt
