'morning everyone -

total 55pee - not bad for a new 'virtual' cd

:rolleyes:0 -
They'll be releasing a deluxe CD / vinyl version with extra tracks and all sorts of sexy artwork, it'll cost £40. I have no doubt a lot of people will buy it.
I'm reminded of the band Shellac who released an album called "1000 Hurts" in 2000 or 2001 - the vinyl version came on top quality, thick-as-you-like vinyl with great packaging, but also it came with a copy of the album on CD. Make of that what you will.
At the very least these two examples make it clear that things can operate on a different level.... it's a difficult one, but the music industry is in a state. Talking of Shellac, music and money - Shellac's guitarist Steve Albini wrote the following article:

Some of you have probably seen it a thousand times, it does the rounds every so often among musicians. It's interesting from a financial point of view too. (A few spicy words in there!).
Another Shellac fan! Good stuff! I'm obsessed with their new album (and I've got it on vinyl too)
Shame on all of you people getting this album for free though. I'll be paying £4 - £5, which I think is a fair price for a digital download. I'd love the discbox, but I can't afford £400 -
I will be getting it at some point soon when the demand on their website has settled down a bit. I will probably pay about a fiver, which seems fair as that is more than they would be getting normally from the record companies, but less than I would pay for a physical CD (which I would normally prefer as I like the artwork etc, but the box set on offer is a bit too much).
I don't approve of people taking it for nothing, as they band have worked hard and deserve to be paid for it (both for their creativity and for the actual time and money they'll have spent recording, paying for the studio, sound engineers, instruments etc). It is like honesty boxes to buy your newspaper at a station - I would never dream of taking the newspaper for free even though technically I could probably get away with it, and I would hope this site wouldn't promote that kind of behaviour. I suppose the only upside is that they'll probably top the album charts on all the extra downloads that would have not been counted through illegal free downloads.0 -
Anyone know what quality the download will be? Perhaps it depends on what you paid?0

This is a brilliant initiative from Radiohead, cutting out the middleman and bringing down the price of music significantly. By taking advantage of what they are doing and buying for £0.00 or similar tiny amounts it will only put other artists off trying the same route to market.
This is a win win offer for the consumer (us) so dont ruin it. You will only be shooting yourself in the foot by not helping it to take off. At least pay a couple of quid!!0 -
The amount I would be prepared to pay is dependent on how good it is. It's a pity you can't hear it first.Whitegoodshelp0

i have all radioheads albums, they are fantastic.. and a genuine bunch of lads from oxfordshire and up north who ooze talentIt's nice to be important but it's important to be nice!
If u think my post has been helpful, push my 'thanks' button cheers0 -
This is clever thinking. Knowing that their cd was going to be put up on torrent and p2p, by giving the people who would normally steal the music an option to give a few pence it at least makes them something, rather than nothing.0

I'm quite surprised and a little ashamed of the number of people taking this for (effectively) nothing! How would you feel if this was your work being devalued?0

Exactly.
It has generated lots of publicity which Im sure will be a great help. Im not a fan so I wont be downloading but if I was I would probably make a contribution of around 4 to 5 quid. Radiohead know that they will be naking much more money this way than they would through a record company and as stated above they will be bringing on board people who would normally use p2p.
I wouldnt take it for free but at the end of the day Radiohead are giving people the option to make the contribution they want.0
