Door Handles - external?

Hi all, this might be a dumb question but we want to replace the door handle to the side of our garage with something that looks a little nicer than what is there (think cheap, functional, covered with paint)

However, when I look on the likes of screwfix, I can't tell what handles are suitable for external use or not

we're looking at this kind of style.

Is there any difference or anything specific I should be looking for that determines if a handle is suitable / not suitable for external use?

TIA

That's pretty obviously an indoors handle. It would probably be okay in a sheltered outdoors location.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

You may find looking under 'security & ironmongery/door furniture/door handles/commercial handles'
Otherwise the Screwfix staff are pretty helpful in store

Thanks - that handle is an example of the style we are looking for. However, may I ask what makes it 'obviously' an indoor handle?

One giveaway is the range of handles includes an external one which is recognised by having a key hole. Strength is an issue because handles take some force and abuse - Ironmongery Direct rate handles "light use", "medium use", "commercial use" so this gives an indication. Pollution and hands attack the finishes, but many modern chrome ones are suspect here, and brass became a no go area on this. Look at the guarantee periods to give guidance here.

Thanks for the info about the guarantee period. The key hole in the door currently is separate to the handle (hence we're not looking at any with plates) and it's a relatively lightly used door.

I'll have a look at Ironmongery Direct.

Going by memory only, because Ironmongery Direct deal with trade customers everything comes with guarantees. But retail consumers can use them and the product range is huge. Quality does matter - the worst handles I have ever seen were being sold recently in B&Q and clearly aimed at retail customers who were to be taken advantage of. Screwfix and B&Q are the same people but I doubt Screwfix stocked those handles - the trade customers would not stand for that.

Just popping back to say that I saved some ££ and ended up using some paint stripper we already had to strip the handle and key hole that were already on the door rather than replace them. They look much better IMO, OH still talking about new ones but I'll leave that in his court for the moment.
