Acquiring new glasses cheaply

Options
Hello, everyone. I suffer from terrible short sightedness and I can tell that I am due a new prescription. I would require an eye test and I would love my glasses to be of that thick black hipster fashion. What is the cheapest way I can go about doing this? I am open to both disability benefit loopholes and cheap rates in highstreet retailers.

Thank you

    This might help.

I brought mine from SelectSpecs. Due to an error there was a delay and to apologise they allowed me to pick a £10 pair for free. I got these and I think they are exactly what you want. They are very comfortable, although £12 now. They come with basic lenses.

It would be helpful if you told us what disability benefits you are in receipt of, also if applicable if they are means tested or not.
  • Thank you, MrCol1000.

So, if I were buying from this site, would I go for an eye test somewhere, note down the lens type and frame dimensions I'm after and order the specific specs from the site?

    Thank you
  • I will go into a highstreet retailer, get the cheapest eye test possible (perhaps people have suggestions for that) find the perfect size and then order the design in that style that I'd like, online
  • If you get certain benefits you might qualify for a free eye test and a voucher worth £39, if not tesco very often do free test, and their glasses are reasonably priced.
  • Boots have a free eye test promotion every now and then.

I have just ordered my glasses from select specs and waiting on delivery :D all seems to be ok so far.
  • If I have an eye test with Tesco (and I've never seen them promoting that) do I have to buy their glasses? Looking at the responses I should get a free/cheap eye test and then buy from Select Specs?
  • I have a free eye test with Specsavers, they do vouchers on their website for selected stores. Then I get mine from Glasses Direct. They do free home trials so you can test the glasses for size before ordering.

So to confirm, Oneyork, I use a voucher acquired online for a free eye test in spec savers, determine my prescription and dimensions and then order from a cheap online store like the one you provided?

Tesco are doing free tests at the moment.

Regarding buying cheap frames : online companies only supply within a limited prescription range. Mine is not very extreme but is not available online.

I buy from Asda (test at Specsavers) as they include thinner, lighter lenses in the price, if your prescription indicates that they are needed. I have bought 4 pairs for about the price of two pairs from Specsavers , the latter only having two thin lenses for two pairs, whereas Asda's include all thinner lenses.
