Car insurance company charging for not updating licence details

I have recently got an accident and during the documents check it turned out that the insurance company has my wife's provisional licence details instead of the full licence she has now. Today I received a letter from them that they are charging me over 200 quid for the changes in the policy. What happened was that when I was taking up the policy my wife still had a provisional licence. Then she passed the test and got the full one but I did not think of letting the insurance company know about it. However, I changed the car after that and changed the policy as well. I am sure I told them new details but if not, is there any way to avoid to pay this excessive charge or at least reduce it somehow? I think they are charging me for the whole period since the licence changed.

Drivers with a full, new licence and no solo experience are higher risk (therefore higher rated) than provisional drivers, who have to be under constant supervision.

Does your policy wording state they must be kept informed of any changes to the info recorded on the statement of fact?

Insurance always increases substantially when someone passes their test, they will be back dating it to when she passed her test as that is when the risk increased, it is advisable to pay it unless you want a cancellation on your records.
