Electric oven keeps blowing electric what can this be???

We have a double oven cannon Kendal cooker, which is about 7 years old, the bottom oven has given up the ghost about a week or so ago, so now been having to use the small top oven with difficulty, with 5 of us in the household been finding this difficult,
My husband decided to check out the element in the main oven so we could see what replacement was needed, after taking off the main cover to the element & checking for the element number my husband tried to turn our electric on but now the cooker keeps blowing all electrics, he has kept the cover off as we will buy a new element replacement & seems silly putting the cover back on when it's all tucked away inside the oven, but every time he tries turning on the electric it keeps popping & off it goes! So now he has screwed the cover back on the element incase this was effecting it but no the whole electric keeps tripping out, the only way we can now get the electric on I see when he keeps the trip down in the RCD for the cooker, can't even turn the cooker RCD on at all even with the cooker turned off! Just can't understand why this is happening as it wasn't happening before he took the element cover off, anyone got any idea why this is happening? We are now wandering is this just a simple element change or has our cooker now completely broken down, can't even use top over or hob now,

First things first, be safe. Make absolutely sure the oven and all its electrics are isolated. Can you pull it out of its position? If so, check the wiring and connections. On my oven a few months ago, I had a similar problem and traced it to a loose neutral connection on the terminals at the back of the oven. Electricity had been arcing across the gap and burnt through the cable outer. I had plenty of cable length to work with so was able to cut back the damaged cable, expose new ends of the twin and earth and properly secure them in the terminal block.
It might be that in moving the oven(?) to inspect the element, your husband has accidentally dislodged the wiring?
If you have any doubt what you're doing, call a competent electrician.0 -
He hadn't pulled it out at the time of checking the element, but since it has kept blowing all the electrics he has pulled it out & checked all the wiring inside & out to make sure there isn't any burnt out or wires showing, all seems ok, but we still can't turn on the cooker RCD switch in the cupboard as he got a bolt of it when he tried turning it on, we have electric on, but have to keep the cooker one off as it just trips the whole lot, not sure if this would happen if it was just an element needing replacement thank you for you mail Xx.0

Call an electrician. You should not be getting a shock from the RCD switch. Don't touch anything until you get it looked at professionally.0

I agree. Get an electrician to look at it.Aylesbury_Duck wrote: »Call an electrician. You should not be getting a shock from the RCD switch. Don't touch anything until you get it looked at professionally.0 -
At the risk of simply repeating what others have said - call an electrician NOW. There is something seriously wrong if you're getting a shock from the RCD switch.0

Leave the MCB to the oven off for the time being. I highly doubt he had a bolt from the RCD, they can make quite a pop if you try turning them on under fault conditions which can be a bit unnerving if he wasn't expecting it or not experienced with them tripping. If he definitely did get a shock, then call a sparky.
I imagine the fault lies with the oven, personally I'd call a local appliance repair guy in, they're gonna have more experience and easy access to parts than your common sparky.
It's likely that disturbing the already knackered element has completely broken down and is now causing the problem, or he could have damaged/disturbed some wiring.0 -
Thanks guys, he's telling me it wasn't actually a shock, it did scare him as he wasn't expecting it but a loud noise & blue spark, but we can't understand its turned off by the wall in the kitchen but when you turn the RCD (cooker) switch on it trips again,0

but we can't understand its turned off by the wall in the kitchen but when you turn the RCD (cooker) switch on it trips again,
To me, that would indicate a problem with the wiring inside the socket / cooker point - is it a standard 13-amp plug, plugged into a socket, or is it hard-wired to a proper cooker point ? But either way I'd suspect the wiring - perhaps something has come adrift when the cooker was moved ?0 -
Hmmm, gremlins.
I'd knock the power off, disconnect the cooker completely from the outlet, make sure all the terminals are tight and try turning the MCB back on, see if it holds and then switch the cooker switch back on.
Then go from there.0 -
He is pretty irresponsible re-energising with the cover removed. The cover is there for a reason and frankly he seems like a potential candidate for a Darwin award.0
