Protecting Title Deeds

I watched the One Show last night - in which they advised you to ensure that the Land Registy notifies you if someone tries to change the the ownership of your property (evidently 250 + attempts are made annually to do this, using false ID)
Has anyone managed to find out how to get the Land Reg to do this ?

BTW, every 6 months you get an alert from them telling you nothings happened (hopefully).

I got the first one of those at the weekend and nearly had a heart attack as its titled "HM Land Registry Property Alert Activity Update" which is enough to put the fear of god in you

Then in the body which you only see when you open it, it says (again hopefully)

    Dear AnotherJoe

Thank you for using the HM Land Registry's Property Alert service. This email contains a six month summary of the activity on your account.

The following properties are currently being monitored on your Property Alert Account:

    Property address: xxxxxxxxxx
    Title number: AA NNNNNNN

There have been no alert notifications issued on this property

I registered mine and a sibling's house .... just out of idle curiosity, just because I had a spare 2 minutes and I might as well.

I don't expect there to ever be a problem, but I did it because it was in front of me on the screen.

I'd have not gone out to find it to register... I ended up there by clicking a link and it was made easy, so I did it.

    No.

In theory ID theft is possible in Scotland too but I wouldn't overplay the risks, scary though it sounds - 250 attempts in the whole of E&W out of how many million owners? Obviously even less of a risk if you're an owner-occupier.
