Online conveyancing solicitor - a cheaper option?

Options
Hello

I'm posting on behalf of my daughter.
She has to buy a house and sell hers on a shoestring (she has a buyer, and her offer has been accepted today on a house she wants)

Can anyone recommend a good online conveyancing solicitor please, as I believe they are cheaper than visiting local ones in our town.

Thank you!

They might be cheaper, but if they take so long that end up jeopardising a sale then they will not be cheaper. It is when things go wrong that solicitors are worth their money.

There isn't a huge amount of difference in cost. I have bought and sold many times and the one time I used an online conveyancer, I decided I would never do it again. I had to tell them what to do and drag them kicking and screaming to completion.

    Find a local recommendation, imho.

They can sometimes be cheaper but

    * not always - many hide 'extras' in their terms of business eg completion of SDLT Return, professional indemnity, goodness knows what else. So a 'cheap' quote may turn out the same or costlier

    * they are fine when all goes fine. Smooth transaction with no legal/practical hiccoughs.

    * when a hitch arises, or you don't understand something, you'll regret not being able to get a face-to-face explanation

My advice then would be to use a local small firm (cheaper than a huge multi-partner firm).

But if you go online, read the smallprint in close detail, compare every charge on the quote against others for comparison, and then keep your fingers crossed. It can work out as people here will vouch it did for them.
  • Thanks.

I've had horrendous experiences with my last two different local conveyancing solicitors.
My sale and purchase only went through in the nick of time, and the amount of times I had to chase and beg for work to begin on my case was unreal. Having a face to face solicitor doesn't guarantee good service

I have had a look around on the net and have found so far that my daughter can potentially save around £500 going down the online route. That's with a fully comprehensive quote with full breakdown.
I'll make sure any firm quotes she gets are 'fixed' so there's no nasty surprises later on.

If anyone can recommend reputable online companies, I'd be very happy to hear please

I've used online conveyancers twice and had no issues whatsoever. Had a named solicitor who contacted me direct and kept me updated. It was easier for me as I just couldn't get to a 'physical' solicitor in office hours. The cost was slightly less but not a great deal.

you get what you pay for generally

find a local one who you can deal directly if there are any issues.

Used an online conveyancer and I had to chase them every day for them to do anything, RMNJ I believe. If I didn't the sale would have fallen through due to the amount of time taken. No leases or complicated covenants either

  • Going against the grain here. I used "Rebecca Hardee" at AMS Solicitors after getting an "online" quote. All charges were listed upfront, saved me approx. £500 compared to local solicitors and she was absolutely excellent. As a FTB I had a lot of questions and I couldn't of asked for more.
