I am having a loft conversion and refurbishment of the rest of the house. The work will involve removing couple of walls and we needed a structural engineer to calculate the supporting beams..etc.The guy I got through recommendation has quoted me £1200 to do the work. Is that reasonable? I have never had to do this before so I am not sure but a friend who had work done before in his house told me that I should expect a quote around £500

Seems high to me from my limited knowledge.
I think we paid £400 for an engineer to do calcs for an extension involved a few beams and some deep foundations and roof design. This did not involve a site visit as the architect did the drawings.

I paid £120 for our structural engineer to do calcs for a steel supporting beam and the accompanying drawings. It involved a single site visit.Thinking critically since 1996....0
