How Do You Stop Claiming Tax Credits When They Automatically Renew?

Dear all,
I am totally fed up with the Tax Credits system. I currently recieve a small amount of Child Tax Credit, however due to years of over payments (still paying one back from 2003/4 now...) I have lost all confidence in this agencies ability to deal with details of my finances, and quite frankly would rather not recieve a penny from them.
I live in fear of the day when they want to do some kind of enquiry into my case, that I will end up though no fault of my own owing them yet more money (because lets face it - thats what will happen). I have read all of the manuals on the HMRC website, and it fills me with dread the powers these people have!! They can demand all sorts of financial details, which to me are private! Bank statements, credit card statements, childcare recipts, bills, etc.
I have decided that after this financial year is over, I no longer want to claim anything from them, entitled or not.
However, where do I stand when they automatically renew, and they treat your declaration of income as an application to renew. I will quite happily provide my income details for the end of this financial year, however I do not want to reapply.
How can you stop claiming them? I dont want to call them, because previous experiences of their 'help' line have proved rather less than 'help'ful.
So any advice would be fantastic.
Ps. While we are on the subject, does anyone know how to claim tax relief on business mileage for 2006/07 and can you still complete one for 05/06?

Thanks for the site - I did a thorough search through that one a few days ago, as I have seen it posted on here a few times0

You could just take the money, shove it in an ISA ... then if in the future they say they've overpaid you, you can hand it back. Better than not taking it in the first place.
On the other hand, if there's been no squeak from them for more than 6 tax years .... consider it yours.0 -
Id just be a million times happier without it!
I know I could just save it, but I am terrible at saving, and find it nearly impossible!
The temptation is too much for me.
I just want rid, I want off their database, and nothing more to do with them!0
