Do i need permission for a rear canopy?

We have a 1930's semi that's been extended full with at the back of the house about 15 years ago. Would we need permission to add a full width, wooden canopy on the back of the house, slightly sloping roof away from the house, made from thick wood/oak? Something a bit like these:

I wouldn't have thought so as it's not a permanent structure...if your in doubtba quick call to the planning department will usually set your mind at ease.0
