Going on holiday by yourself

I tried looking at websites like last minute, expedia etc. but the searches and deals features are all geared towards two people sharing.

So for a person going somewhere alone, do you think its best to just book the cheapest flight (rather than trying to find a hotel and flight deal) and then book to stay in a hostel (single room not shared), as thats what im thinking of doing now....

Well it depends what sort of holiday you are after. If you go for an activity or exploring holiday then they are quite geared up to single travellers - try Exodus for an example but there are many others.

If it's something more 'conventional' then your plan is a good idea.

no, definately not a exploring/activity holiday, thats not what i think of when i think of holiday.

thanks - i will look at hostels as hotels are also geared towards two people sharing a room.

Many hotels charge on a per room basis. It really depends on what your budget is, and where you want to go?

I have travelled along for the past five years, and always stay in 4* or 5* hotels. Just a case of shopping around for good deals x

Some holiday companies offer no single room supplement on selected dates. They sell out early so it depends when you want to go and don't usually apply to peak dates -but single people often don't want school holiday dates anyway.

As others have said it depends where you are planning to go. Some independent hotels have single rooms and some of the searches offer a choice of options, (which should throw up any that do offer singles), though you generally do end up in a double. As dmg says, most now offer a room rate, sometimes bargain rate expecting to make up on food. If you get a bargain then it's not going to matter anyway, and you would have that extra bit of luxury! Some hotels offer a night free if you can be flexible. It is worth searching carefully as I have seen some big diversities in rates.

dmg did you mean to type 'alone'? I have this idea of you travelling 'along' a never-ending road, lol. :D

Oops, yep alone, though the latter is probably more apt! x

I would be careful with booking single rooms. They tend to be the worst in the hotel, and little better than a box room. But again, it depends on what you are looking for and what your budget is.

I do this all the time - I've had some wonderful holidays this way!

You also get the choice when you're in a hostel (depending which one you go for) to keep to yourself, or to meet other singlies in the communal areas for a bit of a natter so you don't feel lonely.

I had a great time at a 'Christian shelter' (I'm not Christian BTW) in Amsterdam once, who did BBQs and played films in the courtyard garden every evening so you could join in if you wanted to.

Another hostel I booked once was in Italy, and it was a lovely countryside traditional stone building, but with some shared rooms (4 in each). It worked out as £60 for 8 nights, and the flights were £4.99 each way (plus taxes).

  • Ther are usually lots of single people who would love the opportunity to travel with another single person. You often see adverts in newspapers or contact magazines. It would give you some company whilst away and also share the cost of the room. You never know may be the start of a wonderful relationship!!!

Please be so careful if you choose to go down this route. These ads are rarely checked for authenticity. Your safety is worth so much more than half the cost of a room.
