Recent experience calling E.ON by phone has, on average, meant a 45 minute call. The one person I spoke to about the calorific value stated they had worked for the company some 26 years and during this time the calorific value had never changed. Others here disagree and I don't have time for extensive research on the subject.

I repeat the title of my thread:
Is there any IHD giving consumer meter readings?
I looking for a consumer reading in the correct units required by an energy provider, simple. Is there any IHD (or similar product) giving consumer meter readings, yes or no, please?

    No

    That's the short answer.

The IHD is paired with the meter, you can't pick and choose displays, even if yours broke and you got your hands on a replacement it's not possible for a consumer to pair a new IHD.
If you find another supplier who provides meters with an IHD that provides the information you want, you'd need to switch to them and then pay for a meter swap out of your own pocket.

The lady you spoke to at E.ON either misunderstood your question or was just wrong.
Extensive research is not required. The official, government approved method for converting between volume and energy is defined here:

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/gas-meter-readings-and-bill-calculation

That is not a very long page. It doesn't matter which supplier you have, if you're in the UK that's how they have to do it, end of.

Don't bother with E.ON's phone support, my own experience and that of others on this forum has been that they can be very hit and miss. Just find The E.ON Reps Malc or Helena's email addresses from their profiles here, and message your query to them directly, they know what they are talking about.

Fine, my question doesn't necessarily rule that out. So can you or someone else please provide me a list of suppliers who can install meters with an attached IHD or other technology which displays for me the meter readings for gas an electricity in a convenient form which can be used as consumer readings.

The only person who so far has attempted to answer my question is EachPenny in post #2. While I thank them for their helpful suggestion, unfortunately, due to the push button / keyboard challenge on the physical meters, I looks as if won't be able to adopt that particular solution. So now it's over to you, or anyone else:
Is there any IHD giving consumer meter readings?
I just want the name of a supplier and details of any product on the market which answers my question. If it involves new meters or some other modification or installation of additional products, just follow EachPenny's example and post an answer giving details.

So do you really believe that either EDF or Scottish Power will replace his EON smart meters with a different make/model of SMETS1 meter?

The problem is that he accepted foundation stage meters including their known problems and these will resort to being dumb meters on switching supplier to get a cheaper deal.

Presumably these suppliers will want to install smart meters to properties that currently have dumb meters to meet their agreed quotas, so his foundation stage meters will need to eventually be adopted by the DCC.

Early adopters of tech always pay the price because it becomes obsolete in no time.

    What a farce!

No need, based on the experience I mentioned in the post I linked to:
I look after an account for somebody who has smart meters fitted by EON and even though she is no longer with EON, she can still read her meters from the in-house display EON provided.

    Agreed. :)

EON have fitted different makes/models of smart meters and the OP has been wittering on about this since he started a thread back in January.

EON got fed up with him and is not prepared to divide the kWh figure displayed by 11.2 to get a reading in cubic metres to provide customer readings, so a lost cause with an axe to grind.

This is the IHD that E.ON supplied with the Secure Liberty meters they gave me last year.

It only has the option to display the gas as kWh. (And a single, combined reading for the electric too)

(I took that image this morning while I was apparently NOT helping the OP by figuring out the exact multiplier to convert this reading back to m³)

I'm aware there are other models that have been handed out at other times, but I've never seen one.

They probably will if he switches to them and pays the cost of a meter swap out of pocket, which he suggested he will.

The CV of the gas is printed on your bill, you can see that it changes from one bill to another (but not by a lot).

But it's not the actual CV of the gas that you need (that's what the supplier uses to convert cubic metres into kWh), what you need to find out is the assumed CV that the meter uses to estimate the kWh that it is displaying. It doesn't change like the actual CV of the gas does (that's why the kWh reading is only an estimate), and once you have it you can easily re-create the meter reading in seconds. The best place to call would be the meter manufacturer.

Failing that, try calling Ofgem and ask if they know of any meters that can give you a remote reading in cubic metres.
