Bit of trouble painting fence panels

Bought some panels at the start of the year. The panels have vertical feather edge slats onto horizontal pieces.

I've painted them up both sides but every time i come to them it's like they've curled open revealing an unpainted line in between the slats. It doesn't necessarily run the full length of the slat, in fact mostly it no longer does. Some areas there may just be a small thumbnail but with my OCD i don't like that, even if it's on the rear. Other areas may be a line running a good few inch.

I doubt there's a knack to it & it's just a case of keep going back & painting it but i thought i'd ask in case there was a way around this.

Unless that way is using a paint suitable for spraying which would mean a total recolour :rotfl:

Just take care whilst painting. It is easy to demonstrate, but hard to explain. Slowly go upwards on each joint with a good quality brush loaded with quality paint. The paint should flow into any gaps.

More fence paint and run the brush into the edges between the slats

won't fix the issue completely but will reduce the amount you see and number of times you need to touch up

If they are curling that bad sound like cheap panels.

    got a link?

Yeah they are cheap panels really. Not in my pocket but they seem cheaply made. The panels we have at the other side of the house were done with tanalised timber by the bloke who did our drive & he knocked them all up himself - the wood was much thicker

I'd been using a 2" brush but it's been awkward getting the bristles in at points. I should get myself a smaller brush that isn't so 'beefy' so that i can get in there.

If these things keep curling any more they'll end up popping off the horizontal runners!!!

I should've really knocked up my own with better quality timber. It surely can't be that hard & even a DIY idiot like myself should be able to do it. It was just laziness.

I don't think its a problem with the size of the brush. I think its more about technique. I was painting our fence panels only yesterday, and I use a 4 inch block brush to paint; it's much faster.

All I do is hold the brush so that the head is vertical (the bit holding the bristles is at right angles to the floor). Hold it at 45 degrees to the fence panel, and then work the bristles into the gap, loaded with plenty of paint, running up and down the gap. It should cover pretty quickly.

You say you've bought them but are they in place? If so, do they slot into concrete posts or are they properly nailed into place? If they're not yet fitted or can be slid out, orientate them sideways, overlaps up. That way the loaded brush will make painting "down" into the overlaps easy.
