Paying Cash in @ Post Office

Little 'survey' as I'm told this is not a common problem (yet it's happened to me twice in the last few months) - has anyone had problems with getting amounts credited to their bank accounts when paying in cash at a Post Office?

What specific problem(s) have you encountered?...
Refusal to transact?
Money gone missing altogether?
Or simply a one working day delay to credit the destination account?0 -
You use an old style deposit slip rather than debit card? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I have never had any problems.
I often make cash deposits into my Co-op current account. They appear immediately the second I deposit the cash, it shows in my available balance there and then, can be transferred out or withdrawn from a cash machine should I ever feel the need to withdraw cash immediately after depositing it (handy if you want to change bags of coins for notes, as you often can't do this directly but can do this at the post office by deposit followed by withdrawal).0 -
Thanks for your input guys; I use my paying-in book/slip (as I would at the bank branch) - is it quicker/better to use my bank card?
I paid in cash (and a cheque as a separate transaction in the envelope, which I assume is then posted to the bank). Paid them both in last Wednesday (before 3pm), cheque appeared today (waiting to clear) as a credit on my account but no sign of the cash and after over an hour on the phone to the bank they can't investigate until next Tues.... Not good....Make the most of everything in life (especially Avon)

You need to make sure that your bank accepts card deposits from the Post Office. Not every bank does. You need to check it here (click Withdraw and Deposits then your bank). As I live around the corner from a post office I purposely have an account I can deposit using a card. I wouldn't trust paying in envelopes with cash however secure the post office system is. I wouldn't want to wait for it to credit. Using a card is instant.Anything I say in no way constitutes financial advice and anything you do is your own decision.0

Barclays services available at Post Office® branches
Current Account
Cash withdrawal: Yes - with card and PIN
Balance enquiry: Yes - with card and PIN
Payments in:
Yes - with personalised paying in slip from Barclays
Yes - with Chip and PIN
Cheque deposit: Yes - with personalised paying in slip and deposit envelope from Barclays
What's the difference between 'with chip and pin' and 'card and pin'? Had no idea that it was better to use my bank card when paying in cash (do you get a receipt?) so will use that route in future. The envelope route is for cheques only so really strange that the cheque credit shows on my bank account but not the cash.
Appreciate your help.:TMake the most of everything in life (especially Avon)

No problem! I had an issue with RBS when I realised you cannot deposit with their card.
With the different methods, all I can think of is you can withdraw from the counter like an ATM so you only need a card with a pin. To deposit you need a card with a chip for the extra details on the chip, maybe? Then again, with First Direct it only states; Payments in: Yes - with card as they swipe the magnetic strip and do not use the chip. I'm sure someone with better knowledge can explain.
I believe (it has been a while) they issue you with a small receipt stating the amount of your deposit.Anything I say in no way constitutes financial advice and anything you do is your own decision.0 -

Use your debit card. Cash is credited instantly.0 -
Using the card (it's essentially a reverse ATM transaction as it's facilitated by the LINK network) and shows instantly.
Using the deposit slip method, it takes 1 day plus as the slip requires to be processed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
