Wow - thank you all. Some excellent suggestions.

And thank you jojothetightfisted - he comes home every year, ranting in utter fury at the state that Worthy Farm is left in, with all those abandoned tents and belongings. And he knows full well he'd get it in the neck from us if he arrived back home having abandoned anything and not disposing of it properly! :D

For zips that keep splitting, there is a trick to try where you can nip the zipper part together with a pair of pliers.

I will see if I can find a link to show you what I'm meaning, I fixed a coat zip with this method.

Edit: there is loads of links available with pictures, search split zipper.

+1 for what JoJo said about the zip being under pressure, the fabric being fragile & plain well done for trying to repair as opposed to replace.

No messing tents bring memories & so forth but some are not designed & built to last more than a couple of festivals - for all our memories of tents lasting years, the new lightweight tents can be pushed to last a weekend. Even carefully handled (our Scout quartermaster has got a Lot more picky in the last couple of years as funds are finite & Scouts not always as careful & thoughtful with kit as we'd hope) but door zips get extra hammer as they are between a tent occupant & wherever they need to go for relief.

I'd recommend getting someone who has an industrial sewing machine to do this, as someone mentioned thin thread isn't going to last you need thicker upholstery type thread & the zip tape will be beefier for a tent opening.
You can get waterproofing tape for seams which would probably be suitable to put along the back of the stitching line (I've actually got some upstairs from a project that never was).
If I'm anywhere near ish I'm happy to help.

There is a place in pontefract that repairs a tent for us last year. Maybe. Or local for you. Call some of the go outdoors type chains locally to you they may know of someone.
