    I've been Money Tipped!
I have been speaking to the sellers and they told me its best to get double the width for hang, but to be honest I don't want that I just want a straight line that looks tidy and blocks out people looking in, but I am no expert.

Part of it is for my veranda door so people cant see in, I know its just a little ocd but I have bad experiences in past with people peeking in such as landlords, or school kids at lunchtime using garden at a former property so don't want people seeing in.

A single flat width of plain net is still fairly transparent if your nose is pressed up against a window.

I wouldn't go with 2.5 width, double is fine.

If you're convinced you only want a flat 'straight line' you could always try it and see how you get on. If you don't like it, buy another bit the same width and you've then got a pair you can open like you mentioned before.

Just having a straight panel might not give as much privacy, as double the width or more.

I have double thickness plain white voiles over patio doors, mainly to keep the sun out in the summer, but good for privacy too. I made them myself, so all one header but have hemmed sides and bottom separately, so that I can gather one or both voiles in a curtain accessory (big ring with chopstick, also have large clasps) in the middle, to allow more sunlight/viewing outside as and when.
Viewing outside is not that great with the double thickness, but great for keeping the sun off my furnishings, and pretty good for privacy in the evenings.

Glad I found this thread, am looking to replace my parents net curtains ( 30+ yrs old!!) since they are in a very tatty state,no surprise given their age.

Assuming I am looking for simple white net curtains which are cost-effective and will do the job, would Amazon or Ebay be best places to start my search? My local b&q do not stock net curtains which surprised me but to be fair I guess they are a bit old skool now :)
    any suggestions welcome, thanks

noclaf On Amazon enter plain white nets , select The Textile House and John Aird and the top ratings .
There are a number of plain white nets to choose from . I bought some of the Jayne a few years ago and they were excellent value and decent quality . I think I bought from the textile house and delivery was fast and no problems .
    I don't use ebay so can't help there .
Physical shops Dunelm , Abakhan , The Range and others depending on where you live .

ps Two to two and a half times width always or as has been suggested two seperate curtains along side each other for the option to tie back when wanted .

There but for fortune go you and I.

I'm not sure why people are so against nets? We have nets and they do a much better job than blinds in allowing you to see outside and also have privacy inside.
They are cheap and easy to fit and don't have to look like grandmas. We have them on our house and they look modern and clean. A lot of our neighbours have those vertical blinds that do not give you much privacy unless you have them closed in which case you may as well brick your windows up.
Measure your windows and pop down to dunhelm mill and they will cut them to size.

Although I'm no big fan of nets I dislike the vertical blinds even more. I think they look like the sort of thing you'd have in an office or commercial premises. They're also what lots of BTL landlords use. I think it makes a house look clinical.

Just remembered I do have 'nets' in that I have long, lace Ikea panels in the spare bedroom. But I have these instead of curtains and a white 'wood' venetian blind at the window.

It seems, in the jargon, I have a layered, window solution!:rotfl:

IIRC nets come in different drops, so you would need to try and match them as best you can to your window height. IMO a little bit shorter looks better than nets which are too long and drooping all over the sill. Twice the width, and you only need one per window (providing it's a straight window, not a bay). You can always use window frosting at the bottom to increase privacy. Costs about £5 per roll in B&Q.

  • I gave up nets many, many years ago, but if you are on a very limited income they are a good solution.

We couldn't afford curtains at all when we first moved in. For about 3 months I just had a Primark sheet pinned up at the window at night, for privacy :o Oh happy days :rotfl: Luckily we're on the top floor, but we're still overlooked, because we're opposite some maisonettes, who are on a similar level to us.

Ground floor flat deffo needs something up at the windows, you don't want every Tom !!!! and Harry looking in.

OP what's your budget and what sort of railing/curtain hanging facility have the windows got? Post up a pic if you like, and we can give suggestions as to what might look good :)
