Getting net curtains, what should I know?

I also live in a ground floor flat and felt that I needed extra privacy.
My solution was to have privacy film installed. Probably more expensive than nets but way nicer. Like nets they work on the light - during the day it's like a one way mirror with the mirror effect on the outside. In the evening when I put the lights on the mirror effect is reversed - I can't see out, people outside can see in. At that point it's necessary to have either blinds or curtains. Actually I have both - blinds were already there when I moved in, but I bought curtains as they make the place feel so much cosier.
If you must have nets (or better, voiles) try somewhere like Dunelm.0 -
Well I have just had to buy nets. I thought I had done away with them years ago but have just moved in to a rental where I wouldn't have blinds fitted or privacy film as not my property. Sooo have bought nets from 'the Range'! Lovely funky purple ones for my bedroom and a pink one for the bathroom BUT if I buy for living room area I will probably go for cream! Bed/bathrooms at back, living room faces road. When I had net before they were actually mostly cotton voile, not so keen on these polyester types but I must say these from the range do not look nylony as of old! Where I am now living most of the houses have nets but must admit would rather a more modern wooden blind but again, unable to as a rental via an estate agent! Ah well.0

Another good thing about the film is you can fit it to e.g. just the bottom two-thirds of the window so that you can still look out when standing up, but people outside can't see you when you're sitting down. Not having net curtains or blinds makes the room feel a bit bigger too.0 -

Totally agree that too short a net looks bad. I was rushing that reply before work so probably didn't write all that I ment
With the suspension rods, you have a bit of leeway on where to place it so if the drop is an inch short, you can adjust the rod down a bit. Usually once the nets are spread across the rod you end up with a bit of a ruff at the top which wil hide a slight gap
The only reason I don't like nets too long is because any condensation will settle on the cill making the nets wet and possibly developing mould. Also too long and they collect the dust.
But then everyone is different
Deka, when washing then you take them off, fold them and wash them separately in the machine. They should come out still folded and practically dry. Either hang them on an airer for a while or hang them straight back up. No ironing required0 -
I have net curtains not only for privacy but also to keep some dust and bugs out. We live near a quarry and the amount of dust is amazing!
I use the spring loaded poles and have bought the last 2 sets of nets from http://www.tonystextiles.co.uk and been very happy with them. The site will help you work out the size you need and the length so that they hang well. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
Mojisola, I probably should have shopped around but actually I had a recommendation to this lot and just went with it.

I rang them and gave them the measurements of the panes of glass in question, they gave me a quote and came out to fit them within a week. DD then also used them, and as suggested above just had the film on the bottom part of sash windows.0 -
Well for me if its a beautiful sunny day like this I want to look outside but if I want to chill out on sofa for a while I don't like the idea of people being able to look in, or unwanted callers looking in windows when I am out (I dont have a tv license though I don't need one)
Whilst I am asking though then light in my property is awkward, being a flat we are in the shade but still get a lot of light coming in, despite blackout curtains in bedrooms they are close to useless especially at the back, Technically I need a pelmet for that but if nets can help with that too it would be great.
Front bedroom has regular roller blinds behind the window so most of the light is filered out to a point its good enough, my original plan was to get blackouts for main bedroom to make it pitch black and then move current ones into spare bedroom but then thought since the back bedroom is worse for light, put the blackout ones on there, seen them for like £18 for 2 delivered on Ebay.0 -
I think Venetian blinds are probably best for privacy as I'm not keen on the idea of having to look out through a net. They can also be adjusted to let in just the right amount of light.0

Did look at venetians but they are a pain to put up and expensive, relative put one up in kitchen for me and it took then ages and that was for a fitting on the outside rail, I already have a curtain rail up so would have to be inside one.0
