PC Crashed,poss HDD damaged!!

Ok, my main PC crashed a couple of weeks ago and I had to re-install XP. All was going well until it crashed again. When I tried to re-install it told me the HDD may be damaged and to check all connections.

I checked everything and all seems fine, tried to format the drive and again got an error saying the disk may be damaged. Out of interest I tried installing Ubuntu Linux and that installed fine.

Any idea's why this might happen?

Worst case scenario I will get it fixed under warranty(less than a year old).

    what make is the hdd?
most hdd makers have free diagnostic progs, google it.
the ultimate boot disk has lots of free hdd utility progs on it.
    Get some gorm.
  • What make is it? HP machines sometimes give these diagnostics and they're pretty reliable.

If you've tried the restore disk/program and it doesn't work - and the machine is less than a year old like you say - use the warranty.

It is possible that Linux didn't try to occupy the part of the disk which is damaged, whereas Windows (which is bigger) did.

Can you afford to buy another HD? If so I would get one, install Windows onto it and set is as Master, Slave the old drive an see what happens. I've found Windows XP and Vista to be very cautious with hardware during installations.
  • Sometimes a faulty Windows/restore disc can give you the (false) error that your hd has errors. Can you get another copy of XP to try?

  • Be careful installing 'another copy' of Windows.

It can affect your warranty - or at least the support they'll give you the second they find out.
