You will be able to find the suppliers that will support E10 metering. The only real way of finding prices is to ring those suppliers and ask.

Do you need E10 ? From September you will be able to go onto a single rate tariff without a change of metering.

If you are using storage heaters then E10 will probably still be your best choice.

Yes, it'll all work exactly as now.

The only difference is you will be charged full rate for ALL your electricity, as opposed to the much reduced rates you benefit from for what is probably the majority of your current usage.

Not sure how that squares with your goals stated in the OP...

I suggest you speak to your supplier. I understand they have a special team that deals with such legacy tariffs of theirs :)

My only other advice to you is not to attempt to switch supplier with your current metering; attempts by others in the past to do so have invariably ended in tears.

Hello Jerry and already some excellent advice on here. Thanks all.

Economy 10 meters are a bit of special metering arrangement and, at the moment, we only have the one tariff for them. Thought it might help to let you have some information about how they work. Sorry if you already know this stuff.

These meters are designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They're designed to give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in each 24 hour period for heating and water heating purposes. This is split into 3 time slots during the afternoon, in the evening and at night. To work, meters are wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits at individual properties. Unless manually overridden, this lets the meter automatically switch the storage heaters on and off during the off peak times.

Storage heaters are insulated boxes containing bricks with electric elements running through them. They charge up during the cheaper off peak times. The bricks retain the heat which is then released gradually through the day. A common complaint with storage heaters is a tendency to leak heat and to cool down too early. As a result, the industry came up with Economy 10. As well as an off peak night period, these meters charge up in the afternoon and evening. This 'tops up' the stored heat to help properties stay warm throughout the day.

Is your Economy 10 meter a 2 or 3 rate? If it's a 2 rate, all electricity used during the 10 off peak hours will be charged at off peak prices. If it's one of the older 3 rates, only electricity used during the 5 hours at night will be charged at the cheaper price. Off peak rates during the remaining 5 hours in the afternoon and evening only apply to electricity used for heating and water heating coming through the dedicated circuits.

If the meter's an older 3 rate, we're currently changing these for either a 2 rate Economy 10 or a more conventional Economy 7 or single rate meter. There's no charge to change the meter and, as footyguy says, we've a specialist team looking after these exchanges. It's our Simpler Metering team.

The 2 rate version will be fitted in the same way as your current meter. It'll be wired into the relevant circuits so the storage heaters/hot water can be used as now. As above, there'll still be 10 hours of off peak electricity but this will be for all electricity used. As now, we only have the one tariff for this arrangement.

You'll also have the option of Economy 7 or single rate. This will give you access to more tariffs both with us and with the other suppliers. These meters, though, might not suit the current heating set up and I'd recommend talking to a qualified electrician before going down this route. Our specialist team will be able to give you more advice about this.

As molerat says, things are due to change later this year. Following the CMA report, we're looking at making single rate tariffs available for Economy 10 and other types of restricted meter. I've no further details about this yet. Changing tariff, though, won't affect your heating. As above, at the moment, we've only the one tariff for Economy 10. Not sure what other suppliers offer. Again, I'd follow molerat's advice and have a chat to them.

In the meantime, multi-rate meters like Economy 10 are only cost effective if a good proportion of electricity is used during the off peak times. Wherever you can, it's best to use as much electricity as needed during these times. Totally understand, not all these hours are at sociable times. One way round this might be to use timers on high load appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers etc. There's more information about ways to save money by saving energy on our website.

Sorry to ramble on Jerry but hope this is of some use. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

As above molerat, following the CMA report, we're looking at making single rate tariffs available for all the restricted meters we supply. As well as Economy10, this includes other variations like Heatwise, Economy 18 etc. I don't know how this will work at the moment but am talking to the team set up to look after the project. I'll keep the Forums updated as and when I've more information.

Spot on footyguy. We've a specialist team looking after these types of meter. As above, this is the Simpler Metering team. I'd recommend customers thinking of changing these meters to talk to this team. They'll be happy to help.

You're welcome Jerry. Glad to help. Happy to let you know what's happening with the changes we're looking at for later in the year as soon as I know more.

As you've a newer two rate Economy 10 meter, all electricity used during the 10 off peak hours will be at the cheaper rate. Do you know the times these off peak rates kick in? They're often noted on or near the meter itself. If not, drop an email to the address in my Profile with your account number and postal address including the post code. I'll be happy to let you know what they are.
