Renting a room in a decent home - question!

Hi there,
Would love to get a view from existing or would-be lodgers (ie renting a room with a live-in landlord). In order to get access to a list of quality and fairly priced private homes with rooms to rent ... without trawling through the hundreds of often low-quality listings on eg gumtree or spareroom ... would you be prepared to pay a small one-off fee (eg £5 - 9) to have a basic identity check? The ID check would only be requested when you had found 1 or more rooms/room-mates that you liked and wanted to arrange a visit. The reason I ask... there are many (often older) homeowners who would like to rent a room but are concerned about scammers / want some reassurance. Your views - good or bad - very welcome!!

I would not pay just to view a property. Even a small amount would put me off completely. If the landlord wants those kind of checks at an early stage, then they can foot the bill for them (though it would push you to the bottom of my list, since it's a bit strange).

I also question what kind of check you would be doing that would actually help in any way...

Why would an identity check cost anything at all?

I presume you don't actually mean ID check?

    Am I understanding this right?

You are proposing setting up a business dating vetted lodgers with landlords?

I'm afraid that contravenes forum rules.

But I may have the wrong ed of the stick.

In essence yes, or at least some kind of guarantee to LLs that this person has been 'identity checked' - there's no meaningful check he/she could do for £5-9 and still make a profit.

The OP HAS stopped short of typing out a proposed business name, but yes, they're using this forum to gauge whether their business idea is in demand.

Will the landlords also be providing similar verification to the prospective tenants that they are who they claim to be and have the right to rent the rooms?
