    Thanks for the replies.
I will call a car adaption place and see if I can get any info.
We could add about £500 to the budget which will help but also need to think about the height of the car because he can't bend.
We have a manual motability car at the moment and were looking at an automatic next time because he has problems using the clutch.
He has been told he can buy the car we have for £6300, the £2000 is already taken off the cost, but the cost of a loan is more than his award and with insurance, tax and aa to pay for is not something we can afford.
I wouldn't even bother looking at adaptions, there's plenty of automatics about these days. It hardly seems worth paying all that extra money for them to adapt a manual (i don't even know for sure if it's possible) when automatics are available. To me that seems pointless and with a budget of £2000 it will only eat into that even more.

And I quote from that page:
    Look for:
solutions that give you full control without adapting the car more than necessary

Can't understand why you don't just go for an automatic. Lots of them around.

My DH can only get into the driver's side of our car because of difficulty bending L leg (bionic leg - don't ask). Once he's in, he doesn't need to use his L leg at all and can drive for long distances, completely relaxed.

I've never heard of a hand-operated clutch. Once you get used to a normal automatic you wonder why you ever questioned it.
