Money Moral Dilemma: Should I make mortgage overpayments ahead of my partner?
Comments

I have recently taken on a mortgage with my partner, and since he earns less than I do we apportion the payments according to our income. I have the capacity to make overpayments while he doesn't (though his income is likely to overtake mine in the next few years) - should I do this to save us both money in the long-term, even though I'd still only own the same proportion of the house?
No, to answer your question. I 'd keep my money separate.
You are making 2 key assumptions here- firstly that his income will overtake yours, and secondly what he will do with the extra money when it does. You need to consider what if his income doesn't improve .
In the event of a break-up, there is still a minimum solicitor's fee to pay even if you only get back what was yours- 25 years ago this minimum fee was £2,500 and I've no idea what it is now.0

Why not discuss with the only party who really matters: your 'partner'.0

Financially it makes sense. I guess you are worried about what would happen if you split because otherwise its a no brainer. My husband earns a lot more than me but has never questioned the fact he contributes financially a lot more. We share the success. I do all the house work and cooking etc instead. It works for us.
 Evaluate your relationship then decide.0
